Minnesota Crookston Volleyball Falls 3-0 to Winona State

WINONA, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball team put together a strong third set and led late against Winona State University, but ultimately fell 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-19) Fri., Oct. 19 at McCown Gymnasium in Winona, Minn.

The Golden Eagles hit .115 on the match with 23 kills and 13 errors. In addition, Minnesota Crookston notched 37 digs on the match. The best offensive set for the Golden Eagles came in the third set as she hit .308 with nine kills and one error.

Winona State hit .238 for the match with 43 kills and 18 errors. The Warriors tallied 42 assists for the match.
Minnesota Crookston falls to 4-19 (2-13 NSIC) with Friday's loss. Winona State improved to 10-13 (7-8 NSIC) with the win.

Callie Schapekahm (Sr., MH, Eagan, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles with five kills and a .214 hitting pct., while Sabrina Leuer (R-Jr., OH, Hamel, Minn.) came off the bench in one of her best matches of the season with four kills and an .800 hitting percentage.

Set One
Winona State controlled the first set in the early going as they jetted out to a 10-3 lead after a Megan Flom service ace. Minnesota Crookston cut the deficit to 11-7 with a kill from Porsha Porath (Fr., OH, Windom, Minn.). The Warriors used a 5-1 run to push out to a 16-8 advantage. Winona State would use their run to ignite their momentum as they took the first set 25-13.

Set Two
The Golden Eagles were within 4-3 early in the second set after a Flom service error. The Warriors responded with a 5-2 run as they moved into a 9-5 advantage following an Alexis Bass service ace. Minnesota Crookston countered with a 7-4 run to cut the lead to 13-12 after a Madison Rizner attack error. Winona State responded with a 4-0 run to move into a 17-12 lead. The Golden Eagles were able to cut the lead to 23-19 late in the set. However, the Warriors were able to close out the set with a kill from Paige Christopher and a Minnesota Crookston attack error as they took the frame 25-19.

Set Three
The Golden Eagles started out with a 3-2 lead early in the third set. The Warriors responded with a 3-2 run to lead 5-3 following back-to-back kills by Goar. Minnesota Crookston would take the 13-11 advantage after a 10-8 run stamped by a Porath kill. The two squads were knotted up 15-15 after a Christopher service error. The Golden Eagles remained within 19-18 after a Sydney Kruisselbrink (So., S, Rochester, Minn.) service ace. However, Winona State ended the set on a 6-1 run as they won 25-19 to take the match 3-0.

Minnesota Crookston treks to Upper Iowa Sat., Oct. 20 for a 3 p.m.
