Box Score St. Paul, Minn.- The UM Crookston soccer team returned to the pitch in St. Paul, Sunday morning, as they took on Maryville University (St. Louis, Mo.) in a weekend nonconference match.
Both teams scored in the opening frame but the game went the distance as the Saints got the best of the Golden Eagles in a double overtime, 2-1 win. Maryville struck first when forward Erin Ginsberg (Sr., Cary, Ill.) finished off a cross by Amanda Kaltwasser (Fr., Belleville, Ill.). The goal came in the first two minutes of play and was answered in the 25
th minute as Golden Eagle junior defender
Jessica Scott (Post Falls, Idaho/Criminal Justice) notched things at 1-1 when she converted a penalty kick.
Throughout regulation, the Saints outshot Crookston 28-6 and Golden Eagle sophomore goalkeeper,
Olivia Puttin (Rogers, Minn.) was up to task making ten total saves. Of the six Crookston shots, forward
Maggie Peterson (Fr., Princeton, Minn.) took four, three making it on goal.
Neither team scored through the first bonus period and the Golden Eagles had a solid chance off a corner kick in the 102
nd minute of play but Maryville stopped the threat, immediately got the ball up field and Caite Huesgen (Fr., St. Louis, Mo.) beat Puttin, low right, from point blank range. Huesgen was set in on goal by Ashley Pogue (Sr., Carol Stream, Ill.) who got the ball just over the final UM Crookston defender who couldn't get a head on the pass.
The Golden Eagles (0-2) will return home to Crookston for their next match when they open up NSIC play on Tuesday. The Beavers (0-0) of Bemidji State University will make the trek to Crookston for an evening game, scheduled to start at 5:00 pm.
