ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team dropped the opening game of the 2017 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Tournament 10-0 to Minnesota State University-Mankato at Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Mavericks used a gem of a game from Dalton Roach, in which he gave up just one hit and notched 14 strikeouts, and three home runs to lift them to the victory.
Minnesota Crookston will play an elimination game on Thurs., May 11 at 12 p.m. The Golden Eagles will take on Minot State University at Faber Field. Minnesota State moves on to play Wayne State College (Neb.) Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
Roach, an All-NSIC First Team pick, had impressive outing on the bump for the Mavericks. Roach went eight innings and gave up no runs on just one hit with 14 strikeouts and two walks offered. Roach picked up his ninth win of the season.
Parker Hanson (So., RHP, Hawley, Minn.) got the ball in the start for Minnesota Crookston. Hanson had a strong start in the first and second inning, but ran into trouble in the third and fourth. Hanson was dealt the loss after giving up five earned runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts. He gave up two home runs on the day.
Minnesota State broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third as Eric Peterson blasted a three-home run. The Mavericks added a run two batter later as Dylan Dresel hit a solo shot to make it 4-0.
Minnesota State added a run in the bottom of the fourth when Luke Waldek's sacrifice fly plated Josh Wenzel. Hanson hit Hunter Harnisch with the pitch in the next at-bat and that would be the last batter he would face.
Jacob Butcher (R-Jr., RHP, Palmer, Alaska) came on in relief and got the Golden Eagles out of trouble as the score remained 5-0 in Minnesota State's favor.
The Mavericks would look to get something started in the bottom of the fifth with a lead-off walk offered to Teddy Peterson. However, Peterson would be caught stealing on a great throw from
Zach Frazier (R-Jr., C, Grand Rapids, Minn.) to
Jason Angelo (Jr., IF, Manteca, Calif.. Butcher struck out Dresel in the next-at bat to make it two out. However, Jordan Hart took it into his own hands with a solo home run to make it 6-0 Minnesota State. Butcher would get out of the inning but not without the Mavericks adding one to their advantage.
The Mavericks added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh. Eric Peterson reached on an error at first base by
Reed Hjelle (So., 1B, East Grand Forks, Minn.). He came across to score on a single by Teddy Petersen as the Mavericks moved their lead to 7-0. A Jordan Hart double brought around Teddy Petersen, making it 8-0 Minnesota State.
Brandon Kresl (Sr., 1B/DH, Crookston, Minn.) broke up Roach's no-hitter with a single to right field in the top of the eighth. However, the U of M Crookston would not be able to get anything else going against the Minnesota State ace in the rest of the inning.
The Mavericks padded their lead with two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Waldek reached on an error at short stop, allowing Cody Ulfers to come across to score. An Eric Peterson sacrifice fly brought Waldek home to extend the lead to 10-0.
Kresl was 1-of-1 for the day to lead the way, while Hjelle was 1-of-3 for the U of M Crookston.
Butcher gave up just one earned run on four hits in 3.1 innings of relief.
Matthew Dallas (Sr., RHP, Boise, Idaho) also appeared out of the bullpen. Dallas gave up two runs on two hits in one inning.
The Golden Eagles will continue their second-consecutive NSIC Tournament appearance Thurs., May 11 at 12 p.m. against Minot State.
