Golden Eagles Open Conference with Pair of Losses in Bemidji

BEMIDJI, Minn. – A perfect game for Bemidji State University's Jessica Yost in game one and three runs in the final three innings of game two would lift the Beavers over the University of Minnesota Crookston softball team Thurs., March 30 at BSU Softball Field in Bemidji, Minn.

The Golden Eagles fall to 10-14 (0-2 NSIC) as they opened conference play with the doubleheader loss. Minnesota Crookston still remains just one win short of their total from 2016 and two wins short of tying their program record of 12 wins in 2004. Bemidji State improved to 12-5 (2-0 NSIC) with the victories.

Minnesota Crookston would struggle to get anything going against Yost in game one as the Bemidji State pitcher had a perfect game with no runs, not hits and no base runners at all along with 12 strikeouts on the game.

The loss for the Golden Eagles would go to Kassidy Klaphake (Jr., RHP, Cold Spring, Minn.), who gave up seven earned runs on nine hits. Paige Pitlick (Fr., RHP, Jordan, Minn.) pitched well in relief as she gave up just one run on five hits in two innings.

The Beavers opened up the scoring in the second when Brooke Phillips singled up the middle to drive in Makayla Pagel. BSU pushed their lead to 3-0 as Jessica Burlingame doubled to right field to plate Angie Roberts and Alayna Krejci. An Alexandra Ripka sacrifice fly would drive in Phillips to push the lead to 4-0.

Bemidji State added three runs in the third inning. Burlingame would come through again with a double to center field to plate Phillips and Roberts. A Yost walk with the bases loaded would drive in Lexi Derrick to push the lead to 7-0.

The Beavers would round out the scoring with a single by Pagel to drive in Megan Castor to put the game at a final tally of 8-0.

In game two, Minnesota Crookston's Bailey Braatz (Sr., RHP, Buffalo, Minn.) would continue her strong season with a solid outing. However, Braatz would suffer the loss to move to 8-4 after giving up three earned runs on seven hits with one strikeout and five walks.

Yost would pick up her second win of the day after giving up one earned run on one hits with eight strikeouts in four innings. Rochelle Koshalek picked up the save for Bemidji State after going three innings and giving up no runs on one hit with three strikeouts.

Minnesota Crookston opened up the game two scoring with a Rocky Bjorge sacrifice fly to drive in Victoria Bayliss (Jr., OF, West Bloomfield, Mich.) to make it 1-0.

BSU would knot up the game 1-1 when Burlingame reached on an infield single and drove in Roberts. Kelsey McAllister would then reach on a fielder's choice and drive in Olivia Tucker to push the lead to 2-1.

Krejci would push the lead to 3-1 on a single through the right side to drive in Castor.

Minnesota Crookston would look to Bayliss at the plate in game two, as she went 2-of-3 with one run scored.

The Golden Eagles will return to action Sat., April against Northern State University. The games were officially set for Crookston, Minn. An announcement on whether the games will be in Crookston or possibly relocated to Bemidji, Minn., will be made Fri., March 31.
