Golden Eagles Fall 3-0 to No. 14 Winona State

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-23, 25-9, 25-21) to No. 14 Winona State University on Parent's Night Fri., Oct. 6 at Lysaker Gymnasium.

The Golden Eagles had a commanding 8-3 lead out of the gate in set one and led 16-14 later on in the match. Winona State used a 6-1 run to turn the tides of the set and go up 20-17. Minnesota Crookston came back to knot up the set 22-22 with a Kelci Green (R-Sr., MH, Anoka, Minn.) kill late in the set against the nation's No. 14 team. However, the Warriors staved off Minnesota Crookston for the 25-23 set one victory.

Minnesota Crookston held with Winona State early in the second set as they were down just 4-3. The Warriors took over in the set as the Golden Eagles struggled with staying in system. Winona State would take the set 25-9 as it was very one-sided with the Warriors hitting .515 and the Golden Eagles hitting .000.

The Golden Eagles rebounded with strong moments in set three. Minnesota Crookston pulled within 20-16 on a Callie Schapekahm (Jr., MH, Eagan, Minn.) kill. The Golden Eagles hung with Winona State as they were within three points at 24-21 after a Maria Wrage attack error. The Warriors used a commanding shot from Maria Fruechte to take set point 25-21 and match point 3-0.

Minnesota Crookston looked to Kassi Green (R-Sr., OH, Anoka, Minn.) with 14 kills and a .211 hitting percentage. Green has been steady for the Golden Eagles all season long as she is currently third in a stacked NSIC conference with 4.04 kills per set. Kelci Green (R-Sr., MH, Anoka, Minn.) added five kills and hit .150 for the match. Kelci Green notched four of her kills in the opening set. Kaycie Hagen (Sr., S, Savage, Minn.) tallied 21 assists as the team hit .121 for the match with 25 kills and 12 errors.

Hagen led the back-row with 10 digs. Becca Vandenheuvel (Sr., DS, Cannon Falls, Minn.) chipped in nine, while Maggie Perrel (R-Sr., Lib., New Germany, Minn.) added eight. Kelci Green paced the block with three block assists.

Winona State featured a dynamic attack on the night with three players notching 10 kills apiece. Wrage had 10 kills and hit .400 for the match. Danielle Rampart also added 10 from the outside hitter postion with a .269 hitting percentage. Jordan Runge also notched 10 kills and hit .381 for the match.

McKenna Larsen led the team with 36 assists as the Warriors hit .303 for the match with 51 kills and just 14 errors.

Becca Pagel paced Winona State with 22 digs. Kate Masberg chipped in 12 digs, while Rampart added 11. Lauren Kudronowicz led the block with two block assists.

Minnesota Crookston will return to action Sat., Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. versus Upper Iowa University.
