MINOT, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball team vanquished Minot State University 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-19) Fri., Oct. 27 at the Minot State Dome in Minot, N.D.
The Golden Eagles controlled Friday's match as they moved to 6-16 (3-10) with the sweep of the Beavers. Minnesota Crookston took both of their matches this season with Minot State as they upended the Beavers 3-2 at the Max & Erma's Classic in Aberdeen, S.D. Sept. 8. Minot State drops to 4-19 (0-14 NSIC) with Friday's loss.
Minnesota Crookston hit .241 on the match with 44 kills and just 16 errors.
Kassi Green (R-Sr., OH, Anoka, Minn.) helped engineer the strong attack on the night with 16 kills and a .250 hitting percentage.
Kaitlin Sikkink (R-So., RS, St. Charles, Minn.) added nine kills and a .421 hitting percentage.
Kelci Green (R-Sr., MH, Anoka, Minn.) finished with seven kills and a .375 hitting percentage, while
Deaira Gresham (Fr., OH, Maplewood, Minn.) chipped in six kills.
Kaycie Hagen (Sr., S, Savage, Minn.) guided the attackers with 39 assists. She completed a double-double with 17 digs.
Minnesota Crookston finished the match with 62 digs led by Hagen's 17.
Maggie Perrel (R-Sr., Lib., New Germany, Minn.) added 15 digs, while
Katie Lienemann (Fr., DS, Rosemount, Minn.) finished with 10 digs. The Golden Eagle block looked to block assists from
Kassi Green and
Callie Schapekahm (So., MH, Eagan, Minn.).
Minot State hit .140 for the match with 38 kills and 20 errors. The Beavers looked to 12 kills from Shelby Spuller. Hayley Swain added eight kills and hit .273 for the match. Emily Falldorf and Jeanne Brenner chipped in seven kills apiece. Kelsey Dewulf led the team with 33 assists.
Defensively, Minot State notched 51 digs on the match paced by 26 from libero Karli Koza. Mekayla Gurley notched 12 digs during Friday's match. The block was paced by two block assists by Swain.
Minot State opened the first set with a 3-2 advantage after a Swain kill. Minnesota Crookston countered with a 4-0 run as the Beavers had four-straight errors to make it 6-3. The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 8-4 following a Sikkink kill. Minot State countered with a 4-0 run to knot the set up 8-8 with a Falldorf kill. Minnesota Crookston took the lead 14-13 after a
Kassi Green kill. Swain countered and knotted the set up 14-14 for Minot State. The Golden Eagles went on a 3-0 run led by a Gresham kill, making it 17-14. Minot State pulled within 21-20 following a Schapekahm attack error. Minnesota Crookston took three of the final four points to win 25-22 culminated by a Sikkink kill.
Minot State again had the early lead in the set 5-3 following a Brenner kill. Minnesota Crookston responded and took the advantage 6-5 after
Kelci Green put down the point. Minot State countered and took the lead back 8-6 following a Gurley service ace. The Beavers moved their lead to 15-12 after a Hagen ball handling error. The Golden Eagles responded with an 8-2 run to go ahead 20-17 following a
Kassi Green kill. Minot State had one last comeback to knot it up 20-20 as Swain scored. However, the Golden Eagles closed the match out on a 5-2 run to win 25-22 stamped by a Sikkink score.
U of M Crookston opened the third set on a 3-0 run led by two kills from Sikkink. Minot State responded with a 3-0 run of their own to knot it up 3-3 with a Brenner kill. The Golden Eagles led 5-4 with a Schapekahm score. However, the Beavers moved back into the driver's seat with a 3-0 run to make it 7-5. Minnesota Crookston countered with a 3-0 run to go ahead 8-7 with a Spuller attack error. Minot State once again countered and took the 9-8 lead after a Gresham attack error. However, Minnesota Crookston regained the momentum and closed the frame on a 16-11 run as they took the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.
Minnesota Crookston will return to action Sat., Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. against University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D.
