CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston men's basketball team struggled out of the gate on Friday as they fell 82-58 to University of Minnesota Duluth. The Golden Eagles would fall behind 40-24 at the break. UMC would get as close as 10 in the second half, but a 31-17 run to end the game would tip it even further in the favor of the Bulldogs.
Minnesota Crookston falls to 5-9 (1-7 NSIC) with the loss, while Minnesota Duluth improves to 4-10 (3-5 NSIC) with Friday's win.
The Golden Eagles would look to
Harrison Cleary (Fr., G, Oak Creek, Wis.), who had 13 points and seven boards. Cleary shot 6-of-15 from the field.
Chase Knickerbocker (So., G/F, Annandale, Minn.) chipped in nine points and seven boards.
Gable Smith (R-So., F, Lodi, Wis.) added eight points and eight boards, while
Jim Warmack (Jr., F/C, East Grand Forks, Minn.) also had eight points.
Minnesota Crookston shot 23-of-57 from the field for 40.4 percent from the field. The Golden Eagles were 4-of-13 for 30.8 percent from beyond the arc. They also struggled mightily from the charity stripe as they were just 8-of-17 for 47.1 percent from the field.
Minnesota Duluth had five players in double-figures. Jake Wilson had one of his best games as a Bulldog with 14 points on 5-of-11 from the field. Cody Tomlinson added 13 points on 6-of-9 from the field. Kyle Schalow had 12 points, while Luke Harris had 11 and Logan Rohrscheib added 10.
The Bulldogs had a strong shooting game as they were 29-of-56 for 51.8 percent from the field. UMD connected on 13 three-pointers. They were 13-of-25 for 52.0 percent from beyond the arc. In addition, they shot 11-of-14 for 78.6 percent from the charity stripe.
Minnesota Duluth won the battle on the boards 35-33. They moved the ball around well as they had 19 assists to just eight turnovers on the game.
UMC would go up 7-5 early on after a Cleary layup. UMD would take over as they would go up 18-13 after a Wilson bucket. The Golden Eagles would be able to cut the lead to 18-16 on a
Connor Gamble (R-Fr., G, Stillwater, Minn.) trey.
UMD would counter and get their advantage out to 35-20 after a Schalow three-pointer. The Bulldogs would go into the break up 40-24 after a Tomlinson basket.
The Golden Eagles would cut the lead to 42-30 early in the second half after a Cleary basket. They would be able to cut into the lead even further as they got it down to 10 after a Cleary free throw.
Minnesota Duluth would take over though and would out-score the Golden Eagles 31-17 in the final 11 minutes of the game. UMD would come away with an 82-58 win over UMC.
The Golden Eagles will look to get back on track Sat., Jan. 7 as they take on St. Cloud State Uiversity at 6 p.m.
