Unearned Runs Plague Golden Eagles in Pair of Losses to Wayne State

WAYNE, Neb. – The University of Minnesota Crookston softball team fought hard in both games but unearned runs would plague the Golden Eagles as they fell 13-0 and 12-10 to Wayne State College (Neb.). The Golden Eagles fought back in game two following late home runs from Allison Foley (Sr., SS, Lockport, Ill.) and Morgan Duda (Fr., IF, Clinton Township, Mich.), but UMC would hold on for a 12-10 win. In game one, Cassy Miller would no-hit Minnesota Crookston with six strikeouts in five innings as Wayne State won 13-0.

Minnesota Crookston falls to 7-27 (1-13 NSIC) with the pair of losses, while Wayne State improved to 17-18 (12-4 NSIC) with the Saturday sweep.

Minnesota Crookston would get just one base-runner in game on as Brooke Timmins (Sr., C, Magnolia, Texas) reached on a walk.

Wayne State was led in the first game by Lexie Loos, who went 2-of-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored, while Alyssa Schropp went 2-of-3 with four RBI's and two runs scored.

The game one loss went to Heather Cunningham (So., RHP, Jacksonville, Fla.), who went 1.2 innings and gave up 10 earned runs on nine hits.

In game two, the Golden Eagles would jump out early on Wayne State as Gabriel Antolak (So., C/3B, Zimmerman, Minn.) singled to drive in Victoria Bayliss (So., 2B/OF, West Bloomfield, Mich.). Foley would cross the plate on a throwing error from the right fielder to make it 2-0.

Wayne State would take the 6-2 lead in the second. Schropp led the way with a double to right center to drive in Monique Alyea and Shelby Wobken. Later in the second, Emily Chandler would double to clear the bases and score three.

UMC would rally to cut the lead to 6-4 in the third as Alexis Khoshaba (Sr., OF, Richmond, British Columbia) hit a two-run home run to drive in herself and Antolak.

Minnesota Crookston would get another run back in the fourth when Jozie Garner (Jr., OF, Eureka, Minn.) singled to left field to drive in Kate Howell (So., OF, Badger, Minn.) as UMC cut the deficit to 6-5.

Wayne State would respond in the fourth. Shelby Wobken hit a solo home run to make it 7-5.

In the fifth, the Wildcats would add four unearned runs as Wayne State would take the 11-5 lead.

UMC would cut the deficit to 11-8 as Foley came through with a clutch three-run home run in the sixth to score herself, Bayliss and Garner.

The Golden Eagles would look to make the seventh-inning comeback as Duda hit a two-run home run to drive in herself and Kristi Larson (Sr., IF, New Ulm, Minn.). However, UMC would fall just short 12-10 to Wayne State.

Minnesota Crookston was led by several bats. Antolak had three hits with one RBI and one run scored. Bayliss went 3-of-5 with two runs scored, while Garner was 3-of-5 with one run scored and one RBI. Duda came through in the pinch hit situation and is now 4-of-5 on the season as a pinch-hitter with three home runs on the year.

The loss went to Bailey Braatz (Jr., RHP, Buffalo, Minn.), who pitched 3.2 innings and gave up four earned runs on nine hits. Mikayla Jones (Fr., RHP, Huxley, Iowa) would pitch well, going 2.1 innings, giving up no earned runs on five hits.

Minnesota Crookston will continue their road trip as they face Augustana University April 10 at 12 and 2 p.m.
