UMC Softball Falls 8-0 and 10-0 to Minnesota Duluth Wednesday in Road Doubleheader

DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston softball team fell 10-0 and 8-0 to University of Minnesota Duluth Wed., April 13 at James S. Malosky Stadium in Duluth, Minn. The Golden Eagles would battle UMD in game one, but five runs in the sixth inning led by a pair of two RBI singles from Becky Smith and Natalie Wright would lead the Bulldogs to the win. In game two, the Golden Eagles would struggle to hit Sam Hartmann, who would throw a two-hit shutout.

Minnesota Crookston falls to 7-31 (1-17 NSIC) on the season with the pair of losses. Minnesota Duluth improves to 24-11 (13-5 NSIC) with the pair of victories.

The Golden Eagles would get strong pitching early from Mikayla Jones (Fr., RHP, Huxley, Iowa) in game one. Jones would give up three runs through the first five innings. She would end up getting the loss after giving up six earned runs on six hits with four walks and one strikeout.

The win in game one for Minnesota Duluth went to Cayli Sadler, who would pitch a six-hit shutout with three walks and one strikeout.

The Bulldogs would start out the scoring in the third as Wright doubled to right center to drive in Ashley Schilling.

Wright would get her second RBI of the game in the fifth on a fielder's choice as Hannah Schmoll crossed the plate to make it 2-0. Later in the inning, Wright would be caught stealing, but Schilling would cross the plate on the throw.

The Bulldogs would get to Jones in the third. Sammi Sadler would start it off with a single to drive in Kalynn Tilton. Wright then hit her two RBI single, followed by Smith's two RBI single as the Bulldogs won 8-0.

The Golden Eagles got hits on the game from Victoria Bayliss (So., 2B/OF, West Bloomfield, Mich.), Allison Foley (Sr., SS, Lockport, Ill.), Gabriel Antolak (So., C/3B, Zimmerman, Minn.), Alexis Khoshaba (Sr., OF, Richmond, British Columbia), Sammy Kuhlow (So., 1B, Big Lake, Minn.) and Lexie Sanyoyo (Fr., OF, Kansas City, Mo.).

In game two, Hartmann would be the story with two strikeouts and two hits in five innings in the win.

Bailey Braatz (Jr., RHP, Buffalo, Minn.) would get the loss after giving up five earned runs on eight hits with two walks in four innings.

Sammy Knudson (Jr., RHP, Fergus Falls, Minn.) would come on in relief and give up five earned runs on four hits.

Wright would continue her big day in game two as she doubled in the first to drive in Schilling as the Bulldogs jumped out early 1-0.

Later in the inning, Wright would score on a ground out to make it 2-0.

In the second inning, Schilling would come up with a double to drive in Sadler and make it 3-0.

The Bulldogs would get a fourth run in the third when Sami Schnyder singled to drive in Smith.

In the fourth, Wright would single to drive in Schmoll.

The Bulldogs would come through with five in the fifth led by an Abbey Nelson three-run home run.

Minnesota Crookston will return to action Thurs., April 14 against Bemidji State University at 2 and 4 p.m. at BSU Softball Field.
