Golden Eagles Soar to Pair of Wins in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Minnesota Crookston Softball team seems to be getting well acclimated to Arizona as they were able to extend their win streak to three games. The Golden Eagles were able to go flawless on the day after beating Mayville State University and Robert Morris University 11-8. Minnesota Crookston improves to 4-14 on the season, tying their win total for the 2015 season.

In game one, Mikayla Jones (Fr., RHP, Huxley, Iowa) continued her momentum from yesterday in the circle as she pitched seven innings and picked up her second career win. Allison Foley (Sr., SS, Lockport, Ill) would also have an inspiring performance as she went 5-5 at bat with two runs and three RBI.

Minnesota Crookston would start off hot in the first inning as they scored a couple of runs by Foley and Victoria Bayliss (So., 2B/OF/P, West Bloomfield, Mich). UMC would hold Mayville State scoreless in the first inning as they went three up, three down leaving the score at 2-0.

The Comets would have better success in the second inning as they tied it up 2-2 after two unearned runs.

In the third inning for UMC, Jozie Garner (Jr., OF, Eureka, Kan) would come up huge hitting a triple bringing in Kristi Larson (Sr., IF, New Ulm, Minn), Maggie Morales (Fr., OF, Tucson, Ariz), and Lexie Santoyo (Fr., OF, Kansas City, Mo). The inning would end on a Bayliss fly ball with the score being 5-2.

The Golden Eagles would gain momentum in the fourth inning as they put up another three runs. UMC was able to develop good scoring position after Gabby Antolak (So., C/3B, Zimmerman, Minn) stole second and Foley stole third. Alexis Khoshaba (Sr., OF, Richmond, British Columbia) was able to reach first after an error by the Comets at third base and in doing so allowed Foley to score. Antolak would score after a single from Maycee Trujillo (Fr., 3B/C, Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Khoshaba would score after a single from Sam Rarick (Fr., OF, East Grand Forks, Minn).

After another scoreless inning from Mayville State the score goes to 6-2. The Golden Eagles attempted to put the game away in the sixth inning scoring two runs but the Comets would continue to put a dent in the score as they go on to score three runs of their own putting the score at 11-6. In the seventh inning, the Eagles were able to absorb the Comets final punch as they held Mayville State to just two runs to complete an 11-8 triumph.

In game two of the day against Robert Morris University, it would be a clash of the Eagles. Sammy Knudson (Jr., P/UT, Fergus Falls, Minn) would have her turn on the mound and would give up eight hits and six runs in three innings. Heather Cunningham (So., P, Jacksonville, Fla) would come on in relief in the fourth inning and would give up five hits and two runs.

The Golden Eagles would get off two a slow start going scoreless in the first two innings. Robert Morris was able to get out to an early 2-0 lead going into the third inning. UMC would suddenly wake up to have an explosive inning scoring five runs in the top of the third. Foley would get things going as she continues her success at bat hitting a double to drive in Garner. Foley and Bayliss would go on to score a pair of unearned runs after an error from a Robert Morris second baseman. With Sammy Kuhlow (So., OF/1B, Big Lake, Minn) and Khoshaba left on second and third, Brooke Timmins (Sr., C, Magnolia, Texas) would double to send them both home for a couple of runs. The Golden Eagles would leave the inning with a 5-4 lead.

In the fourth inning, both UMC and Robert Morris would score two runs putting the score 7-6.

Both teams would go scoreless for a few innings until Robert Morris was able to score a run in the bottom of the seventh. This is where things began to get interesting as both Eagle teams flew even into the eighth inning with a score of 7-7. The Golden Eagles would rally and respond to the pressure scoring an impressive four runs in the clutch. With the bases loaded, Foley was able to score off of a Timmins single for the first run of the inning. Trujillo singled, bringing in Antolak home for the score. Morales put the icing on the cake with a single that resulted in two runs from Timmins, and Larson. The inning would end on a pop fly to third from Foley.

The Golden Eagles would go on to hold Robert Morris to just one run to halt any idea of a comeback. The Golden Eagles would fly higher winning 11-8.

Minnesota Crookston was able to have two inspiring performances having an unblemished record of 2-0 on the day. The Golden Eagles will attempt to keep the wind at their backs as they look to pick up two more wins against Crown College and Carleton College in their final day in Tucson, Ariz.
