CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston football program announced one of their biggest signing classes in school history with 51 players in the fold heading into the 2016 season. The class includes 43 high school signees, two transfers and six players who enrolled at UMC at semester.
Coach
Mike Fritze's class is dominated by 38 players from the Midwest region, including 24 student-athletes from the state of Minnesota, UMC's home turf. The Golden Eagles were also able to bring in regional student-athletes from Wisconsin, Illinois, North Dakota, Michigan and Manitoba. In addition, the Golden Eagles were able to identify talented players in Texas and California and were able to bring in one recruit apiece using prior connections to Hawai'I and Arizona.
"We are very excited about the group of student-athletes we were able to sign for the 2016 signing class," said Coach Fritze. "Since I first got here we have always tried to put an emphasis on the region and most importantly the state of Minnesota. I think we were able to keep some of the most talented players in Minnesota right here in their home state and I am excited to watch those players, along with the other talented student-athletes we brought in from across the region and the nation develop."
A large part of UMC's success on the recruiting trail, which brought in one the largest signing day classes in school history, was due to the return of the entire coaching staff, which was able to identify talent and generate excitement about the program.
"The energy that all of these student-athletes have about UMC football and being part of building something special here was exciting for us as a coaching staff," Fritze said. "We are excited about the building blocks we were able to put together."
The 51 signees will join 62 returning players on the roster, several of which had key roles on the team in 2015. The Golden Eagles look to enter the 2016 season with 113 players on their roster.
"One of the most exciting parts going into next season is how much competition and depth we will have at each position," Fritze said.
UMC signed 17 offensive players, 29 defensive players, one special teams player and four guys who can play either offense or defense.
The student-athletes listed today as having signed National Letters of Intent or Offers of Admission to play at University of Minnesota, Crookston have been verified by the UMC Compliance Office once they sign the National Letter of Intent and financial aid agreement or once the student-athlete has accepted an Offer of Admission from UMC.
The Golden Eagles are looking to build on a 1-10 season in 2015 as Coach Fritze enters his fourth year leading the charge. UMC will be led by returning All-NSIC players
Dre Person (Sr., RB, Detroit, Mich.),
Adam Connette (Jr., WR, Corona, Calif.) and
Noah Lee (So., OL, Vadnais Heights, Mich.).
