ROLLA, Mo. – The University of Minnesota Crookston fell 14-5 and 9-1 in a pair of games against Missouri University of Science and Technology Sun., Feb. 28 at the Missouri S&T Baseball Field in Rolla, Mo.
The Golden Eagles fall to 0-4 on the season, while Missouri S&T remains undefeated with an 8-0 mark on the season. The Golden Eagles would battle in game two, going into the bottom of the eighth down just 3-1 but the Miners would get six in the eighth to win 9-1.
In game one,
Cody Pamperin (Jr., RHP, Shakopee, Minn.) got the start for the Golden Eagles and struggle in the first inning, giving up five runs. Pamperin would go three innings and give up 10 runs, only five of them earned, on eight hits.
The Miners started out their scoring in the first as Tyler Johnson tripled to center field to drive in Tyler Bodenstab. They would continue a big first inning as Johnson would score on a Pamperin error. Ulrich would continue the strong inning for Missouri S&T by hitting a solo shot to make it 3-0. Nelson would then single and Eli Miller would score on an error by
Ethan Mushitz (So., IF, East Grand Forks, Minn.). The scoring would conclude in the first when Collin Zurweiler scored on a groundout.
Minnesota Crookston would cut the lead to 5-1 in the second as
Riley Thompson (So., OF, Owatonna, Minn.) hit a sacrifice fly to drive in
Colton Haight (Sr., C/OF, Rogers, Minn.).
The Miners added two in the second when Johnson scored on a fielding error by
Colt Trebesch (Sr., IF, Glencoe, Minn.). Treor Karbowski would score later in the inning on a Miller sacrifice fly to center field.
Both pitchers would pitch well until the bottom of the fourth when the Miners would chase Pamperin. Johnson would single to drive in Bodenstab. Karbowski then hit a double to right field to plate Johnson.
That is when
Cayden Barta (Jr., RHP, Fargo, N.D.) would come on in relief. Barta would get one out, but then Miller would double to plate Karbowski. Zurweller followed that up with a double of his own to plate Miller to make it 12-1. Barta would get the Golden Eagles out of any more danger.
UMC would get four runs in the top of the fifth. Mushitz would single to drive in pinch-hitter
Mitchell Bornhauser (So., OF, Northfield, Minn.) to cut the deficit to 12-2.
Ryan Haggstrom (Sr., 1B, Apple Valley, Minn.) would then come through with an RBI single to score pinch-hitter
Jeremy Spinner (So., IF, Phoenix, Ariz.). UMC would get two runners to cross on a fielder's choice by
Kenny Perez (Sr., DH, Orlando, Fla.) as Haggstrom and Mushitz crossed the plate.
The Miners would add two more in the sixth as they came away with a 14-5 win.
The loss went to Pamperin, while the win went to Dan Borek, who went 4.2 innings and gave up five earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts.
Barta would pitch well overall for UMC, going two innings and giving up just two runs on two hits, while
Matthew Dallas (Jr., RHP, Boise, Idaho) came in and pitched one inning, giving up one earned run on one hit.
UMC was led by Mushitz, who was 1-of-2 with one run scored and one RBI. Haight went 1-of-2 with one run scored. Bornhauser came in as a pinch-hitter and played well, going 1-of-2 with one run scored.
Missouri S&T looked to Johnson, who was 3-of-4 with three runs scored and two RBI's. Miller was 2-of-3 with three runs scored and two RBI's.
UMC was led in game two by a strong performance on the mound by
Jarad Nelson (Sr., RHP, Karlstad, Minn.). Nelson gave UMC a chance to win, going six innings and giving up just two earned runs on eight hits.
Zac Carillo (Jr., RHP, Manteca, Calif.) would come on in relief and struggle a bit with control, giving up two earned runs on no hits with two walks.
Skyler Carlson (Jr., LHP, Thompson, N.D.) went 0.1 innings, giving up one earned run on a hit, while
Zach Seipel (Fr., RHP, Eagan, Minn.) gave up two earned runs on three hits in 0.1 innings.
Missouri S&T started the scoring in the second as Zurweller singled to drive in Nick Ulrich.
The Golden Eagles would even it up as Thompson stole second and Haggstrom took home on the double steal to knot it up 1-1.
The Miners would take the 2-1 lead as Karbowski scored on a Lance Portwood ground-out. Zurweiler would score in the fifth to make it 3-1.
UMC would have bases loaded in the fifth after a
Zach Frazier (R-So., C, Grand Rapids, Minn.) but single and walks to Mushitz and
Jason Angelo (So., IF, Manteca, Calif.). However Haggstrom would strike out and Haight would fly out as Missouri S&T got out of the inning unscathed.
The Miners would add a run in the fifth as Zurweller scored on a
Thomas Kinsella (Sr., IF, North Branch, Minn.) error.
The Miners' eighth inning was led by a double from Swindle to score Miller and an Adam Richter two-RBI single to plate Swindle and Zurweller.
UMC was led in game two by
Reed Hjelle (Fr., 1B/OF, East Grand Forks, Minn.), who went 2-of-4. Haggstrom was 1-of-4 with one run scored.
Missouri S&T looked to Ulrich, who was 3-of-3 with two runs scored, while Zurweller was 3-of-4 with two runs scored and two RBI's.
The win for the Miners went to Ryan Bearden, who went six innings and gave up just one earned run on six hits with eight strikeouts.
The Golden Eagles will return to action as they face Dickinson State University in a four-game series at a location to be determined.
