ABERDEEN, S.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston softball team had strong pitching overall on Sunday but was unable to capitalize on opportunities at the plate as they fell 5-2 to Jamestown College and 3-2 to Waldorf College. The games were played on day two at the Presentation College Dome Tournament at the Presentation College Winter Dome Sun., Feb. 21 in Aberdeen, S.D.
The Golden Eagles fall to 0-4 to open the 2016 season.
In game one against Jamestown,
Heather Cunningham (So., RHP, Jacksonville, Fla.) went six innings, giving up just three earned runs on eight hits in the loss.
The win for Jamestown went to Hanna Dunnigan, who went four innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits.
Jamestown got on the board first when Dani Norsby singled to drive in Sydney Jeffers. Later in the inning, Emily Newman scored on an Autumn Wang groundout to put the Jimmies up 2-0 in the first.
UMC would cut into the lead in the top of the second when
Maycee Trujillo (Fr., C/3B, Sioux Falls, S.D.) singled to drive in
Gabriel Antolak (So., C/3B, Zimmerman, Minn.).
UMC would knot up the game 2-2 in the top of the third when
Maggie Morales (Fr., OF, Tucson, Ariz.) singled to drive home
Victoria Bayliss (So., 2B, West Bloomfield, Mich.).
Jamestown would take the 4-2 advantage in the bottom of the third. Newman would single to drive in Rylee Perez. Later in the inning, Newman would cross home for Jamestown.
The Jimmes would add one more in the bottom of the sixth as Rheault doubled to deep right to drive home Macaig
Minnesota Crookston was led in game one by several players who got one hit. Bayliss was 1-of-4 with one run scored. Morales went 1-of-3 with one RBI. Antolak was 1-of-3 with one run scored and Trujillo was 1-of-3 with one RBI.
The Golden Eagles would fall 3-2 to Waldorf in game two. The Golden Eagles got a great performance in the circle by
Bailey Braatz (Jr., RHP, Buffalo, Minn.), who went six innings and gave up just two earned runs on four hits.
UMC would get on the board first in the top of the first when
Alexis Khoshaba (Sr., OF, Richmond, British Columbia) hit a solo home run to make it 1-0.
The Golden Eagles would threaten in the second as Antolak and
Brooke Timmins (Sr., C, Magnolia, Texas) led off the frame with singles. However, UMC was thrown out on two occasions, trying to stretch plays.
UMC would threaten again in the fifth with singles from Antolak and Trujillo but UMC wouldn't be able to drive in any runs in the frame.
The Golden Eagles would add their second run in the top of the sixth as
Allison Foley (Sr., SS, Lockport, Ill.) hit a lead-off home run to make it 2-0.
After being able to limit the Warriors to just two hits prior to the sixth, Waldorf would finally get to Braatz a little in the frame.
After Andrea Hartmann singled and Kaitlin Murphy reached on an error, Maggie Eden would be able to come through with a big three-run home run, which would prove to be the game-winner.
The win for Waldorf would go to Kaylie Brindley, who gave up two earned runs on nine hits.
Minnesota Crookston will head to the Husky Dome Tournament in St. Cloud, Minn. Feb. 27 and 28. The Golden Eagles will take on Minot State University and Concordia University, St. Paul on Sat., Feb. 27.
