UMC Softball Falls 9-0 and 2-1 in NSIC Openers to Bemidji State

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston fell 9-0 and 2-1 to Bemidji State University Tuesday in their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) openers at Chet Anderson Stadium in Bemidji, Minn. The games were still home games for UMC after being relocated to the turf football field at BSU. The Golden Eagles fall to 9-16 (0-2 NSIC) with Tuesday's losses. Bemidji State improves to 11-7 on the season.

The Beavers would take game one of the series 9-0 led by a no-hitter from Jessica Yost, who would be the standout for BSU on the day, pitching 12 innings and giving up just one run on three hits in two games in the circle for Bemidji State. The Golden Eagle bats just couldn't get going for UMC in the game one.

The Bemidji State Beavers got out to a quick 2-0 lead on the Golden Eagles as Lyndsey Peterson hit a two-run home run to drive in Angie Roberts in the top of the first.
The Beavers would add a run in the top of the third as Mikayla Osterman hit a solo shot to make it 3-0.

Bemidji State added two runs in the top of the fourth when Jaclyn Braiedy doubled down the left field line to drive in Jessica Yost and Erin Robson to extend the lead to 5-0.

The Beavers would add four runs in the top of the fifth. Peterson would double to drive in Roberts. Lexi Ripka would score on a groundout to extend the BSU lead to 6-0. Peterson would then come across on a groundout to make it 7-0. To cap off the scoring, Courtney O'Connor would single to drive in Alayna Krejci. The game would be called due to run-rule after the fifth inning.

Jordyn Derflinger (Jr., RHP, Henderson, Nev./Elementary Education) would get the game one loss for UMC after going five innings and giving up seven earned runs on seven hits.

Game two would start out as a pitcher's duel between Jessica Yost and Bailey Braatz (So., RHP, Buffalo, Minn./Sports and Rec Management through the first 3.5 innings. Gabriel  Antolak (Fr., IF/C, Zimmerman, Minn./Equine Science) would single to drive in Allison Foley (Jr., SS, Lockport, Ill./Accounting) to break the scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth, giving UMC the 1-0 lead over Bemidji State.

Bemidji State would knot up the game 1-1 in the top of the sixth when O'Connor singled to drive in Ripka. The Beavers would take the lead later in the sixth as Peterson scored on a Robson ground out to make it 2-1 Beavers.

The Golden Eagles would be able to put up any runs in the sixth and the seventh as BSU would hang on for the win.
 
UMC was led by a strong performance in the circle from Braatz, who pitched seven innings and gave up just two runs on three hits with six walks.

The Golden Eagles looked to Foley, who was 1-of-3 with one run scored. Antolak was 1--3 with one run batted in (RBI). Alexis Khoshaba (Jr., OF, Richmond, British Columbia/Sports and Rec Management) was also 1-of-3.

BSU was led in game two by O'Connor, who was 1-of-3 with one RBI. Peterson was 1-of-2 with one run scored.

The Golden Eagles will return to play March 28 at 1 and 3 p.m. against Winona State University in Crookston, Minn. The Golden Eagles will take on Upper Iowa University March 29 at 1 and 3 p.m. Stay tuned to goldeneaglesports.com for any changes of locations or times.
