MINOT, N.D.– The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team led by five with nine minutes to go in Friday night's game, but a 20-9 run to end the game would lead Minot State University past the Golden Eagles 75-69. The Golden Eagles fall to 11-12 (10-9 NSIC) with the loss to the Beavers. Minot State improved to 10-15 (5-14 NSIC) with the loss. The Golden Eagles and Beavers pick up a split on the season.
Minnesota Crookston was led by the play of
Katrina Moenkedick (Jr., F, Perham, Minn./Applied Studies), who had 25 points and nine rebounds on the night. With her 17th point in the game during the second half, Moenkedick became the ninth player to tally 1,000 points in a career. Moenkedick finished the night with 1,009 points.
Ebony Livingston (Sr., G/F, Minneapolis, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) added 14 points and five rebounds, while
Micaela Noga (Fr., G, Parkers Prairie, Minn./Health Management) added 10 points, five rebounds and three assists.
UMC's leading scorer on the season,
Alexa Thielman (Jr., G, Buffalo, Minn./Health Science) was held to seven points and fouled out of the game. Thielman is also closing in on 1,000 points. She has 955 career points.
The Golden Eagles were 27-of-57 for 47.4 percent on the night and were 6-of-16 for 37.5 percent from beyond the arc.
Minot State had five players score in double-figures, led by 15 points and eight rebounds off the bench from Christina Boag. Diondra Denton added 13 points, while Morgan Klose, Alex Haley and Katie Hardy each notched 10 points on the evening. The Beavers were 30-of-62 for 48.4 percent from the field and 4-of-15 for 26.7 percent from beyond the arc.
The Golden Eagles would go into the break with a 34-31 advantage on Minot State led by 15 points from Moenkedick, while Livingston added six. UMC shot 43.3 percent from the field in the first half, but just 14.3 percent on seven attempts from beyond the arc.
Minot State was led by eight first-half points from Hardy, while Denton charted seven. The Beavers shot 44.4 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc.
UMC would build their first-half advantage to as much as eight points with 15:37 left in the second half. Minot State would be able to knot up the game at 60-60 with 7:44 left on a Boag jumper and would take over from there, as UMC faltered down the stretch.
The Golden Eagles will continue their quest to host the first round of the NSIC Tournament tomorrow as they take on University of Mary at 4 p.m. in Bismarck, N.D. The Golden Eagles are tied for third place in the NSIC North with St. Cloud State after the Huskies picked up a win Friday.
