#Tidbits- The Golden Eagles will face-off against Minot State Saturday in Crookston. Minnesota Crookston will wrap up the 2015 season with two games at home against NSIC North rivals Minot State and Minnesota State University Moorhead. The Golden Eagles are still looking to snap a losing streak that stretches 24 games to their last win Oct. 19 when they beat MSU Moorhead. The Golden Eagles came minutes away from beating Minot State at Ed Widseth Field that season, as well, but Brandon Boston would return an interception 59 yards as the Beavers won 20-19.
- Minnesota Crookston has continued to be more reliant on the running game in recent games as
Dre Person continues to improve as a running back, along with the improved play of the offensive line. Person has rushed for over 500 yards this season. In the last three games, Person has rushed for 355 yards in the last three games for the Golden Eagles. UMC has also been utilizing wide receivers
Adam Connette and
Rodney Stewart more in the running game. Connette rushed seven times for 23 yards, while Stewart had four rushes for 28 yards.
- The Golden Eagles have utilized two quarterbacks all season.
Tra Hearns is coming off one of his best games as a Golden Eagle and probably the best start a UMC quarterback has had this season, going 21-of-39 for 247 yards with three touchdown passes. He spread the ball around finding
Adam Connette six times for 83 yards and a touchdown,
Rodney Stewart six times for 64 yards and hooked up twice with
Constant Jackson on touchdown passes. UMC has also utilized
Nathan Cole, who has 963 yards passing with three touchdown passes and 11 interceptions.
- The UMC defense continues to be led by
Lethzee Calderon, who has had a strong senior season at safety.
Calderon has 58 tackles with seven pass break-ups and a fumble recovery.
- The Golden Eagles have had several true freshmen make an impact this season with
Bubba Cook and
Conner Finnestad scheduled to start this week.
Aeric Berner and
William Cole have also started on defense, while
Rodney Stewart,
Kolby Castillo and
Duke Smith have started on offense.
- Minot State has a 1-8 mark on the season under Tyler Hughes. The Beavers fell 32-7 to Bemidji State last
weekend. The Beavers have used four quarterbacks this season. Jose Escobar is slated to get the start for Minot
State. Escobar has 535 yards passing with five touchdown passes. The top target for Minot State has been Porter Sturm, who has 40 catches for 633 yards with six touchdown catches. In addition, Akkil Walker has 29 catches for 297 yards.
- The key to the Beavers offense this season has been running back Jarvis Mustipher, who has 133 carries for 662 yards and three touchdowns. He is actually listed at No. 2 this week behind Darrell Milburn, who has 51 carries for 122 yards.
- Minot State is averaging 286.2 yards of offense this season while giving up 388.1 yards defensively on the year. The Minot State defense is led by linebacker Trevin Swensen, who has 86 tackles for 6.5 tackles for loss, while Aaron James had 83 tackles with 7.5 tackles for loss. In the defensive backfield, look for Marcel Brinson to make an impact as he has 67 tackles with two interceptions this season. On the defensive line, both Thomas Bryson and Mitchell Matthias have been strong with 10 tackles for loss.
