Box Score Aberdeen, S.D.- For the second straight day the UMC soccer team earned a road conference win as they knocked of Northern State University, 2-1, in an overtime thriller Sunday afternoon.
Â
The two teams played to a scoreless first half, with NSU taking the advantage in shots at 10-6. Junior keeper
Lexie Gauger (Green Bay, Wisc./Criminal Justice) was up to the challenge in the opening frame as she made four saves, one of which was on a Wolves breakaway. Gauger also made a pair of saves in the second half along with two more in overtime.
Â
Northern State scored the first goal of the NSIC match when Allie Macdonald (Sr., Hartford, S.D.) found the back of the net seven minutes into the second period. UMC answered back five minutes later when
Courtney Armborst (Sr., West St. Paul, Minn./Biology) converted a penalty kick after a foul inside the box. The goal is the senior forward's fifth of the season which leads all Golden Eagle scorers.
Â
Neither team would score through the rest of regulation, and it appeared that the game would go into a second overtime, but with two seconds on the clock in the first bonus period, senior midfielder
Delaney McIntyre (Flin Flon, Manitoba/Sport and Recreation Management) scored on a ball that came in off a long thrown in.
Taylor Peterson (Jr., Bismarck, N.D./Business Management) picked up her first assist of the season on the game winning goal.
Â
The victory improves the Golden Eagles conference wins to five which ties last year's final mark, both of which are single season bests for the program. With an overall record of 5-8-1, 5-6 in the NSIC, UMC will play another road weekend next week when they travel to Upper Iowa University and Winona State University.
