ABERDEEN, S.D. – Rachel Krogman's 30 points and 11 boards propelled No. 15 Northern State University to a 66-42 victory over University of Minnesota Crookston Saturday night at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, S.D. The Golden Eagles would struggle to hit their shots on the game, shooting just 16-of-53 for 30.2 percent as they fell to 8-10 (7-7 NSIC). Northern State bounced back from a pair of losses last weekend as they improved to 17-3 (11-3 NSIC).
The Golden Eagles were led on the game by
Alexa Thielman (Jr., G, Buffalo, Minn./Health Science), who tallied 14 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the field.
Katrina Moenkedick (Jr., F, Perham, Minn./Applied Studies) added eight points and six boards, while
Emily Gruber (Fr., F/C, Monticello, Minn.) and
Ebony Livingston (Sr., G/F, Minneapolis, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) each had seven.
UMC was 3-of-14 for 21.4 percent from beyond the arc and was out-rebounded 43-27 by the Wolves.
In addition to Krogman's impressive peformance, fellow post player Sadie Stotebery added 12 points and five boards, while Lauren Deadrick came off the bench for six points and six boards.
Northern State was 26-of-56 for 46.4 percent from the field and 1-of-7 for 14.3 percent from beyond the arc.
Northern State would start the game on a 7-0 run before the Golden Eagles would finally get rid of the goose egg with a Moenkedick lay-up at the 15:20 mark. The Wolves though would continue to extend their lead, taking a 15-4 advantage with 12:11 left in the game. Thielman would find her shot to cut the deficit to 15-7 for the Golden Eagles.
UMC would be able to cut into the deficit with made buckets from Moenkedick, Gruber and free throws from
Ashley Martell (Sr., G, Somerset, Wis./Health Science) to cut the lead to 17-12 with nine minutes left in the first half. A Livingston jumper in the lane would get UMC to within three (17-14) with 8:15 left. Northern State would be able to get their lead back out to seven points (21-14) with four points off the bench from Deadrick. A Krogman score in the post would get Northern State's lead back out to nine (25-16) with 5:30 left in the game.
Northern State would extend their lead to 32-18 and would go into the break with the 14-point lead.
UMC would struggle from the field in the first half, shooting just 7-of-28 for 25 percent from the field. In addition, they were just 1-of-6 for 16.7 percent from beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles were led by six points from Moenkedick, while Thielman added five points on just 2-of-8 from the field.
Northern State controlled the glass, out-rebounding UMC by the tune of 24-13. Post play was the story of the first half for Northern State, led by Krogman's 13 points and six boards. Deadrick came off the bench for six points and four rebounds. The Wolves were 13-of-27 for 48.1 percent from the field and 1-of-3 for 33.3 percent from beyond the arc.
The Golden Eagles would open up the second half on a 4-0 run as Livingston connected on two foul shots, and Gruber went up-and-under for the lay-up to get UMC back within 10 at 32-22. A Thielman drive and bucket would get UMC to within eight before Krogman answered for Northern State with a basket and Stotebery made a bucket to get the Wolves back up by 12 with 16:45 left in the game. Northern State would be able to extend their advantage to 18 as they continued their methodical play.
The Golden Eagles would claw their way back beginning with a Livingston old-fashioned three-point play to cut it to 13, Livingston would come away with the steal and UMC would come away with a bucket from Gruber to cut the Northern State advantage to 11 with 12 minutes left in the game. But the Wolves would go back to Krogman to get back up by 15. The Wolves would extend their lead to 20 and Northern State would hang on for the 66-42 win over the Golden Eagles.
UMC will remain on the road as they head to Upper Iowa University Fri., Jan. 30 for a tilt at 6 p.m. in Fayette, Iowa.
