Minnesota Crookston Opens New Year Against U-Mary and Minot State

CROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston men's basketball team will host University of Mary and Minot State University Jan. 2 and Jan. 3 as they open the 2015 part of each of their schedules. The Golden Eagle men's team will battle the Marauders at 8 p.m. Jan. 2 and the Beavers Jan. 3 at 6 p.m.

The UMC men's basketball team is off to one of their best starts in program history. The Golden Eagles have reached three conference wins the quickest in program history with a 5-5 overall mark and 3-3 conference record before the new year. The Golden Eagles have never had three conference wins in their first six games. UMC has been led by the emergence of senior forward Tyler West, Jr., who is averaging 12.9 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. West is the NSIC's second-leading rebounder. In addition to West, Derrick Redd, Jr. comes in averaging 12.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game for Minnesota Crookston. UMC has relied on the three-pointer in their wins, UMC is 41-of-111 for 36.9 percent. In their losses, the Golden Eagles are 22-of-91 for 24.2 percent.

The U-Mary men's basketball team is 2-8 (0-4 NSIC) coming into the weekend. The Marauders have four players who are averaging double-figure scoring. Point guard Marquealis Edwards enters the weekend averaging 13.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game. In addition, guard Damonta Henry, forward Bryan Jefferson and forward Chris Mason are also averaging double-figures so far on the 2014-15 season.

The Minot State men's basketball team is 8-4 (3-3 NSIC) coming into the weekend. The Beavers have been another surprise team in the NSIC North, along with UMC. Minot State has been led by 6-2 senior guard Everett Robinson, who is averaging 12.9 points and 6.8 rebounds. 6-5 forward Thomas Korf comes in averaging 12.7 points and 3.7 rebounds, while 6-0 point guard Dominique McDonald is averaging 10.5 points and 4.2 assists per game.
