Golden Eagle Football Adds Five More Signees as They Round Out 2014 Class

CROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston football program announced the addition of five more players to their 2014 signing class. UMC signed Triston Richert (WR, 6-0 175, Oakdale, Minn./Tartan H.S.) to a National Letter fo Intent. In addition, Kureem Edwards (DB, 5-11 170, Miami, Fla./Robert Morgan Educational Center H.S.), Devin Schirado (WR, 6-2 185, Bismarck, N.D./Bismarck H.S.), Payton Wells (RB, 5-8 210, Taylorsville, Utah/Bear River H.S.) and Avery Williams (RB, 5-7 205, Gonzales, La./Chabot C.C.) have all signed Offers of Admission to compete for the Golden Eagles.

The five signings bring the Golden Eagles total to 43 players who have signed to play football for the University of Minnesota Crookston. The 43 new signees will join 52 players who are currently in camp for the Golden Eagles during the Spring session, bringing the tentative roster for the 2014 season to 95 players, one of the biggest rosters UMC has carried.

Richert is the 34th player to have signed an NLI during the Signing Period. Edwards, Schirado, Wells and Williams bring the total to seven players to have signed Offers of Admission, while two players signed NLI's and are coming in as transfers from junior colleges.

The five signees announced today will more than likely bring to conclusion the signing class for the Golden Eagles, though a few Offer of Admission players might roll in before the start of Fall camp in August. All in all, Minnesota Crookston has brought in players from 10 different states including putting an emphasis on the states of Minnesota and North Dakota. The Golden Eagles have signed 23 players from the states of Minnesota and North Dakota, a major goal of Coach Mike Fritze, who wanted to create a local base of players.

In addition to Minnesota and North Dakota, UMC has brought in five players apiece from the states of Califonia and Texas, four from Florida, two from Georgia and one apiece from Hawai'i, Louisiana, North Carolina and Utah.

The Golden Eagles have also had a lot of balance between offense and defense. UMC has brought in 22 offensive players, 19 defensive players and two special teams players.

The Golden Eagles have brought in 20 offensive players in the class and 16 defensive players, along with two special teams players in the 2014 class.

The student-athletes listed today as having signed National Letters of Intent or Offers of Admission to play at University of Minnesota Crookston have been verified by the UMC Compliance Office once they sign the National Letter of Intent and financial aid agreement or once the student-athlete has accepted an Offer of Admission from UMC.

UMC is coming off a 2-9 season in their first season under Mike Fritze, who had his interim tag removed after the completion of the 2013 season and has been promoted to the head coach. UMC's season included two huge victories over conference rivals Bemidji State University as they snapped a losing streak against the Beavers to capture the "Hubcap Trophy" and defeated Minnesota State University Moorhead to win the "State Farm Traveling Trophy."

The Golden Eagles are returning the core of their staff from last season including Defensive Coordinator Mark Dufner, who will enter his 13th season with the program. Also returning will be quarterbacks/wide receivers coach Mike Clark, defensive line coach Levi Bullerman and defensive backs coach Sean Knox. Robby Case, will make the transition from coaching fullbacks and tight ends to offensive line in 2014. In addition to the six returnees, UMC is also looking to bring in a new coach to advise the fullbacks and tight ends.
