Box Score CLEARWATER, Fla. - The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team fell 10-4 to Johnson University Florida to wrap up their Spring Break trip to Florida Tues., March 18 at Jack Russell Memorial Stadium in Clearwater, Fla. The Golden Eagles end their trip with a 1-4 mark overall. UMC falls to 1-12 overall on the season with Tuesday's loss.
Trevor Buttermore (So., P, North St. Paul, Minn./Criminal Justice) got his second start of the trip Tuesday. Buttermore went six innings, giving up eight earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts.
The win would go to Johnson's Chase Hunt, who pitched a complete game for the Suns. Hunt gave up four runs, three of them earned on 11 hits.
Johnson got on the board in the top of the first inning as Buttermore struggled some with control, hitting two batters in the inning. The first run would cross as Buttermore hit Joshua Perez with a pitch with the bases loaded to allow Brian Cabrera to score to make it 1-0. With two out, a Caleb Richard double would clear the bases, scoring Rasmussen, Perez and Tome.
Buttermore would put together solid pitching innings in the second and third innings to keep the Golden Eagles in it. The bats would come to his aid in UMC's half of the third as a
Colton Haight (So., C, Buffalo, Minn.) sacrifice fly plated
Matt Korte (Sr., 3B/P, St. Cloud, Minn./Accounting), who had doubled earlier in the inning.
With the score 4-1, the Suns would extend their lead in the fourth inning. An Alejandro Manganelly single would drive in Adam Rasmussen, who had singled to lead off the inning. Manganelly would cross the plate when Haight threw out Jose Villafane stealing second, which allowed Manganelly to come across from third to make it 6-1.
Two more runs would score off of Buttermore in the sixth inning to make it 8-1.
Minnesota Crookston would cut into Johnson's advantage in the sixth as
Marcus Campbell (So., OF/P, St. Croix Falls, Wis./Golf and Turf Management) singled to score
Ryan Haggstrom (So., C/1B, Apple Valley, Minn./Accounting), who had also singled earlier in the inning.
Travis Magdzas (Jr., OF, Duluth, Minn./Criminal Justice) came through in the clutch as he doubled to left field to score Campbell to make it 8-3.
The Golden Eagles would get very strong pitching in relief from
Ryan Paasch (Sr., P, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sports and Rec Management), who saw his fourth game with action during the Florida trip. Paasch went two innings, allowing no hits, mowing down the six men he faced.
The Suns would add two more runs in the ninth inning off of
Cody Pamperin (Fr., P, Shakopee, Minn./Golf and Turf Management).
The Golden Eagles were led on the game by
Jesse Jennings (Jr., OF, Robbinsdale, Minn./Criminal Justice), who went 2-for-4 and Robbie Smothers (Jr., 3B, Waconia, Minn.) who also went 2-for-4.
Johnson was led by Rasmussen, who was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and Richard, who was 2-for-4 with one run scored and three RBI's. In addition, Dustin Lawson was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.
The Golden Eagles now return home from their trip to Florida and will quickly jump into conference play. They are scheduled to play University of Sioux Falls March 22 and 23 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
