CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles were not able to overcome their shooting woes Saturday evening. They fell 67-62 to the St. Cloud State Huskies at Lysaker Gymnasium as they shot just 32.8 percent from the field. The Golden Eagles fall to 2-5 (1-2 NSIC) with the loss, while St. Cloud State keeps an unblemished record with a 6-0 (3-0 NSIC) mark.
Alexa Thielman (Jr., G, Buffalo, Minn./Health Science) topped the scoring sheet again for the Golden Eagles with 18 points on 6-of-15 shooting.
Katrina Moenkedick (Jr., F, Perham, Minn./Applied Studies) and
Micaela Noga (Fr., G, Parkers Prairie, Minn./Health Management) were the other Golden Eagles in double figures with 14 and 13 points respectively. UMC outrebounded SCSU by 12 with
Ebony Livingston (Sr., G/F, Minneapolis, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) and
Erika McRoberts (Jr., F/C, Byron, Minn./Health Science) grabbing double figure rebounds.
UMC could not find an answer for Lexy Petermann who led the way offensively for SCSU. She scored 17 points while shooting 75 percent. Karissa LeCaptain had a double-double for the Huskies. LeCaptain scored 14 with 12 rebounds.
The game started off slowly for both sides before heating up after the first media timeout. Thielman gave the Golden Eagles their first lead of the night after a three-pointer from the left wing.
At the second media timeout, UMC led 20-18.
Moenkedick was held scoreless until 6:30 left in the first half. Her basket gave the Golden Eagles a four point lead, 24-20.
An Amanda Christianson layup with 2:18 remaining in the first brought SCSU back ahead and it would stay that way for the remainder of the game outside of a tie in the second half.
SCSU went into the break with a 34-31 lead.
Moenkedick drew the Golden Eagles back even off a terrific entry feed from Noga with 5:12 left in the game, the score 53-53. It was the first time the Golden Eagles pulled even with SCSU since the 2:18 mark in the first half.
Carley Jeffery nailed a three from the right wing to put SCSU up 62-57 with 1:38 to go. After a Noga missed three, the free throw game began and SCSU sealed the game 67-62.
The Golden Eagles have Wayne State College and Augustana College lined up next weekend. They will travel to Wayne for the Friday game and Sioux Falls on Saturday. Wayne State is 0-3 in conference play and Augustana suffered their first loss of the season against Minnesota State Mankato, 78-77.
