ABERDEEN, S.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston football team fell 62-13 to Northern State University Saturday afternoon at Swisher Field in Aberdeen, S.D. The Golden Eagles fall to 0-10 on the season, while Northern State improves to 7-3 with Saturday's win. Northern State was led by sixth first half touchdowns orchestrated by quarterback Jared Jacobson, who accounted for five passing and one rushing touchdown as the Wolves led 42-6 at the break.
The Golden Eagles were led on the day by the play of freshman safety
Jake Newman (DB, White Bear Lake, Minn./Undecided), who was starting the second game of his young career. Newman led the team with 13 tackles and had an interception on the game. In addition to Newman, UMC standout
Greg Lofquist (Sr., LB, South St. Paul, Minn./Criminal Justice) put together another game with 10 or more tackles, his eighth straight, with 12 tackles and two tackles for loss.
Offensively, running back
Dre Person (So., RB, Detroit, Mich./Sports and Rec Management) became the first UMC rusher this season to eclipse 100 yards on the ground with 18 carries for 133 yards and a touchdown. In addition,
Travon Hearns (Fr., QB, Bloomington, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) added nine carries for 48 yards. UMC had 195 rushing yards on the game.
In the passing game, Hearns was 10-of-21 for 58 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions.
Northern State finished with an amazing 601 yards of offense with 258 on the ground and 343 through the air. Jacobson led the way, going 20-of-34 for 286 yards with five touchdowns and one interception. His top target was Cody Kraft with four catches for 77 yards and two touchdowns. In addition to Kraft, Conner Doherty had three grabs for 57 yards, while Benjamin Jastram had two catches for 52 yards and a touchdown.
On the ground, NSU looked to Nicholas Truen, who had 18 carries for 123 yards, while Taylor Houchin had seven carries for 84 yards.
Northern State would get on the scoreboard first as they would tally two touchdowns late in the first quarter. acobson opened things up with a 34-yard touchdown pass to Kraft. A Zach Neer interception of a pass would set up another Wolves' touchdown as Jacobson found Houchin from three yards out to go ahead 14-0.
After just an 18-yard punt from
Tyler Hansen (Sr., DB/P, Morris, Minn./Natural Resources), Northern State would find their way to the end zone again as Jacobson hooked up with Kraft for the second time on the game, this time from three yards out, to go ahead 21-0.
Hearns would manufacture a scoring drive the next time out for the Golden Eagles as he went in on a 15-yard rush. A missed
Michael Maw (So., K, White Bear Lake, Minn./Accounting) extra point would make it 21-6 with Northern State still leading.
Jacobson would answer for the Wolves, as he tallied his fourth touchdown pass of the first half, finding Zachery Barber from 24 yards out as NSU went ahead 28-6.
UMC would drive into Northern State territory on the next drive but a Tommy Smith (Jr., RB, Naranja, Fla./Management) fumble at the Wolves' 30 yard line would give the ball back to Northern State. NSU would again score off the turnover as Jacobson found Mangin for his fifth touchdown pass of the first half, this time from 12 yards out.
Northern State would have an on-side kick at the end of the first half which they would recover and the Wolves would again find the end zone as Jacobson had a two-yard touchdown rush, to account for his sixth overall touchdown of the first half as the Wolves lead 41-6 going into the break.
NSU would find the end zone just once in the third quarter, this time as Jared Hannigan found Jastram for a 31-yard touchdown pass to make it 49-6.
UMC would get on the board again in the fourth courter as Person put together a big play with a 71-yard touchdown run, the longest of the season for a UMC player.
Northern State would extend their lead to 56-13 as Houchin would have a 18-yard touchdown run. The Wolves would round out the scoring as Cody Braeger returned a fumble 20 yards to pay dirt to make it 62-13.
The Golden Eagles will wrap up the 2014 season Sat., Nov. 15 as they take on Minnesota State University Moorhead in the "Red River Valley Showdown" Sponsored by State Farm Insurance. UMC will look to finish the season with a win as they take on their rival.
