Golden Eagle Football Falls to Minot State 50-20

MINOT, N.D. –  The University of Minnesota Crookston football team fell 50-20 to Minot State University Saturday at Herb Parker Stadium in Minot, N.D. The Golden Eagles fall to 0-8 on the season while Minot State improves to 1-7. The UMC offense would produce 326 yards of offense but UMC's defense would give up 440 yards to the Beavers.

UMC freshman quarterback Travon Hearns (Bloomington, Minn.) earned his first career start for the Golden Eagles and would go 12-of-21 for 189 yards with one touchdown pass and three interceptions. His top target on the day was Timothy Mack (Fr., RB, Inglewood, Calif.), who had three catches for 73 yards. In addition, Adam Connette (Fr., WR, Corona, Calif.) chipped in with four catches for 52 yards while Marcus Cheatham (Sr., WR, Stockton, Calif.) had three grabs for 42 yards.

Minot State was led by running back Jarvis Mustipher, who had 14 carries for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Zac Cunha, who went 18-of-29 with 255 yards and four touchdown passes. His top target was Glyn Borel, who had four catches for 77 yards, while Leon La Deaux had four grabs for 59 yards.

For UMC, Greg Lofquist (Sr., LB, South St. Paul, Minn.) notched his sixth-straight game with double-digit tackles notching 12, with 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery. In addition, Lofquist set the single-season record for assisted tackles, surpassing Justin Reed and Mike Nordby. Lofquist needs just 15 tackles to break the single-season mark for total tackles, which would surpass Neil Austin's record set during the 2001 season. In addition to Lofquist, Andrew "Rock" Hall (Sr., LB, Detroit, Mich.) added 13 tackles.

Minot State would start things off with a 34-yard touchdown run from Mustipher in the first quarter. Later in the first quarter, Cunha would hit Borel for a 29-yard touchdown pass. Minot State would add three more scores in the second quarter. Brian Gutierrez would add a 21-yard field goal. Mustipher added a 34-yard touchdown run to make it 23-0 Minot State.

The Golden Eagles would finally get on the board as Hearns found Constant Jackson (Jr., WR, Jacksonville, Fla.) on a 41-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 23-7. Minot State made it 30-7 as Cunha again found Borel for a 13-yard touchdown pass.

UMC would go into break down 30-14 after Hearns ran the ball in from eight-yards out.

The Golden Eagles would look to start off the second half strong and they did so, cutting the lead to 30-20 as Dre Person (So., RB, Detroit, Mich.) went in from one-yard out.
Minot State would quickly get back out to a 37-20 advantage as Cunha found Chase Kimble from 13-yards out. The Beavers would add another score later in the third as Cunha found La Deaux for an 11-yard touchdown strike to make it 43-20.

Minot State would tally one more score as Alamoti Vaenuku scored on a one-yard run to make it 50-20.

The Golden Eagles will wrap up their 2014 home slate as they host No. 2 University of Minnesota Duiluth Sat., Nov. 1.
