UMC Falls to No. 6 Bulldogs 57-3

Box Score DULUTH, Minn. - 42 first-half points ignited a 57-3 University of Minnesota Duluth win over the University of Minnesota Crookston Sat., Nov. 2 at James S. Malosky Stadium in Duluth, Minn. The Golden Eagles were unable to contain UMD's potent offense and were unable to get anything going offensively on the day. UMD finished the game with 471 offensive yards while UMC had just 107. The Golden Eagles also committed three turnovers on the game as the No. 6 Bulldogs were the victor.

Minnesota Crookston falls to 2-7 (2-3 Div.) with Saturday's loss. Minnesota Duluth improves to 8-1 (5-0 Div.) with their only loss coming at the hands of the current No. 1 team in the nation, Minnesota State University, Mankato.

The Golden Eagles couldn't get anything going in the running game as Talo Pascal (So., RB, Arlington, Texas/Communications) led the team with six yards on 12 carries. In the passing game, Kyle Larson (Fr., QB, Clayton, Wis./Health Science) was 8-of-17 for 87 yards with an interception. His top target was Keoni Piceno (Fr., WR, Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Sports and Rec Management) with four catches for 29 yards.

Defensively, Tevin Kellum (Sr., DB, Detroit, Mich./Criminal Justice) was all over the field with 17 tackles, which places in a tie for fourth with current assistant coach Cecil Brown, Jr. and Justin Reed for most total tackles in a game. Kellum also had two tackles for loss and two pass break-ups. Brody Davidson (Jr., LB, Crookston, Minn./Communications) also had a solid game with 11 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.

Minnesota Duluth's explosive offense was led by freshman quarterback Drew Bauer who threw for four touchdown passes and was 12-for-14 for 141 yards. The top receiver on the day was Joe Reichert with five catches for 46 yards. 10 different players rushed the ball for UMD on Saturday with Austin Sikorski leading the way with nine carries for 61 yards while Logan Lauters added six touches for 55 yards and Chaz Thomas had 16 carries for 42 yards.

Defensively, the Bulldogs were led by eight tackles by Jake Lambrecht.

UMD would get on the scoreboard quickly as Lauters culminated a 12-play, 60 ayrd drive with a one-yard touchdown run to put the Bulldogs up 7-0 on the first drive.

After an ineffective drive for the Golden Eagles, Bauer would end a 10-play 57-yard drive with a 33-yard touchdown pass to Zach Zweifel to make it 14-0.

The Bulldogs would finish out the first quarter with one more score as Bauer hit Pat Alexander for a nine-yard touchdown strike to make it 21-0.

UMD would continue to build on their momentum as they commenced the second quarter. Bauer would connect with Nate Zuk for a one-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-0.

The Bulldogs would add to their lead later in the second when Bauer hit Aaron Roth for a six-yard touchdown to make it 35-0 UMD.

With back-up quarterback Eric Kline in, UMD would add one more score in the first half as Kline hit Jeremey Reierson for a nine-yard strike to make it 42-0.

The Golden Eagles would finally put together a drive to end the first half led by a 24-yard completion from Larson to Forrest Dunivin (Fr., WR, Las Flores, Calif./Aviation) and a 17-yard strike to Dunivin. UMC would get on the board as Mike Maw (Fr., K, White Bear Lake, Minn./Accounting) connected on his first collegiatefield goal from 34-yards out to make it 42-3. That would be the score at the half.

UMD added just six points in the third quarter as Tyler McLaughlin connected on field goals of 23 yards and 34 yards to make it 48-3.

The Bulldogs would round out the scoring as Austin Selvick hit Brent Jorgenson  from 15 yards out.  Alex Brown's extra-point attempt was blocked by Matt Borowicz (Jr., OL, Stephen, Minn./Health Science). The Bulldogs would add more one score as Brown connected on a 21-yard field goal to make it 57-3.

The Golden Eagles will return to Ed Widseth Field one last time Sat., Nov. 9 as Minnesota Crookston hosts Northern State University at 1 p.m. The game will serve as Senior Day as the Golden Eagles honor 11 seniors including Kellum, Ricky Jacobs (Sr., LB, Junction City, Kan./Sports and Rec Management), Andrew Steinfeldt (Sr., RB, Green Bay, Wis./Health Science), Joshua Perea (Sr., DB, Pico Rivera, Calif./Criminal Justice), Nataki Morris (Sr., DB, Orlando, Fla./Management), Paul Webster (Sr., DB, Opa-Locka, Fla./Criminal Justice), Adam Eyton (Sr., TE, Burnsville, Minn./Marketing), Freedom McCullough (Sr., DB, Los Angeles, Calif./Sports and Rec Management), Keith McBride (Sr., RB, Lodi, Wis./Management), Jonique Andrews (Sr., DL, Oakland, Calif./Criminal Justice) and Tyler Bos (Sr., DL, Larchwood, Iowa/Criminal Justice).

Steinfeldt, Perea, Morris, McCullough and Andrews were four year members of the program while McBride is wrapping up his fifth year. Kellum was a three-year Golden Eagle team member while Jacobs, Webster, Eyton and Bos were all two-year members of the football program. All have been part of a major turnaround at UMC as the Golden Eagles have won four games in the past two years after not winning a conference game from 2008 to 2012.
