Golden Eagles Conclude 2013 Season With 31-15 Loss at U-Mary

Box Score BISMARCK, N.D. - The University of Minnesota Crookston football team put up a fight Saturday against University of Mary at the MDU Resources Bowl but fell short as the Marauders won 31-15 to send off their seniors and Head Coach Myron Schulz with a win. The U-Mary win avenges UMC's last second 37-36 victory over the Marauders at the Alerus Center on a Richard Haley made two-point conversion. The Golden Eagles finish the season with a 2-9 mark while U-Mary ended the year with a 6-5 mark.

The Marauders were playing their final game with Myron Schulz as their head coach as he is stepping down at the end of the season. The Golden Eagles culminated their first year under Mike Fritze as head coach with two wins, giving Minnesota Crookston four wins in two years after not winning a game in the league for nearly four seasons prior to their win against Southwest Minnesota State University in September of 2012.

The Golden Eagles tallied 248 yards on offense compared to U-Mary's 362. UMC was led offensively by Kyle Larson (Fr., QB, Clayton, Wis./Health Science), who wrapped up his first year as UMC's quarterback going 12-of-27 for 158 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Larson struggled at times but also made some solid throws at other times. His top target was tight end Jacob Pinder (Jr., TE, Orlando, Fla./Management) who finished the game with three catches for 59 yards. The rushing game was led by Tommy Smith (So., RB, Naranja, Fla./Marketing), who had 10 carries for 35 yards.

U-Mary was led offensively by quarterback Craig Bagnell, who went 29-of-43 for 262 yards with three touchdowns in the final game of his career. His top target was Jeremy Mayfield, who had seven grabs for 62 yards while Nick Jolliffe added six catches for 57 yards and Vince Ferrante had six catches for 42 yards.

The UMC defense was led by six tackles apiece from Greg Lofquist (Jr., DL, South St. Paul, Minn./Criminal Justice), Lethzee Calderon (So., DB, Eagan, Minn./Marketing) and Tevin Kellum (Sr., DB, Detroit, Mich./Criminal Justice).

U-Mary's defense was paced by seven tackles and 1.5 sacks from defensive lineman John Oyloe. Nick Polski led the team with 11 tackles on the day.

The Marauders got on the scoreboard first mid-way through the first quarter as Bagnell hit Jolliffe to end a nine play, 53-yard drive to go ahead 7-0.

The Golden Eagles struck back a few minutes later as Larson connected with Keoni Piceno (Fr., WR, Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Sports and Rec Management) for 22 yards. A missed extra point would make it 7-6.

The Marauders would go ahead 14-6 after Vince Ferrante went in from three-yards out to end a 14-play, 97 yard drive.

U-Mary would end the first half with one more score as Bagnell again found Jolliffe, this time from one-yard out to make it 21-6.

The Golden Eagles would cut the advantage to 21-9 early in the second half as Mike Maw (K, White Bear Lake, Minn./Accounting) connected on his second field goal of the season, this time from 30 yards out.

U-Mary's Tyler Ryan matched the three, as he hit a 33-yard field goal three minutes later to put the Marauders up 24-9.

The Golden Eagles would cut the U-Mary lead to 24-15 after Larson went in one a dive from one-yard out but Maw's kick was again blocked.

The Marauders put a stamp on the win as Bagnell hit Jolliffe for the third time on the day, this time from 23 yards out to make it 31-15 with 4:43 left in the fourth quarter.

The loss ends the careers for UMC seniors Keith McBride, Tevin Kellum, Tyler Bos, Andrew Steinfeldt, Joshua Perea, Paul Webster, Ricky Jacobs, Freedom McCullough, Nataki Morris and Jonique Andrews. The 10 Golden Eagles have played a major part in starting a turnaround in Crookston with the four wins in two seasons.
