59-Yard Interception Return Lifts Minot State Past Minnesota Crookston 20-19 in NSIC North Nailbiter

Box Score CROOKSTON, Minn. - A 59-yard interception return by Minot State University's Brandon Boston with two minutes remaining in the game delivered a 20-19 victory for the Beavers over the University of Minnesota Crookston football team Saturday afternoon on a cold day at Ed Widseth Field. UMC falls to 2-6 with the loss while Minot State improves to 2-6 with the win.

The Golden Eagles looked to have the game in hand with the Golden Eagles up 19-13 and the ball and a third-and-three. However, a Larson pass would be intercepted as Boston had a read on Kyle Larson's (Fr., QB, Clayton, Wis./Health Science) pass and ran it 59-yards to pay dirt. After a Brian Gutierrez extra point, the Beavers would take a 20-19 advantage and would hold on to defeat the shocked Golden Eagles.

The game was a defensive battle between the two sides as both offenses struggled to get on track. UMC was held to 164 yard of offense while Minot State had 233. The game was also dominated by penalties. UMC came into Saturday's game as one of the least penalized teams in the nation but it didn't show Saturday as they had 14 penalties for 129 yards while Minot State had 10 penalties for 70 yards.

The lone stand out on offense for the Golden Eagles was Forrest Dunivin (Fr., WR, Las Flores, Calif./Aviation), who had his best game as a Golden Eagle as he showed off his sure hands with nine catches for 83 yards. Larson struggled on the day going 16-of-26 for 141 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. In the backfield, Talo Pascal (So., RB, Arlington, Texas/Communications) led the way with 13 carries for 43 yards, including a 41-yard touchdown run.

The defensive standout of the game was Paul Webster (Sr., DB, Opa-Locka, Fla./Criminal Justice) with 11 tackles and an 85-yard blocked kick return for a touchdown. Andrew "Rock" Hall (Jr., LB, Detroit, Mich./Criminal Justice) added nine tackles. The UMC defensive line played one of their best games of the season as the front seven accounted for six sacks on the day led by Rene Lawson (So., DL, Arlington, Texas/Communication) with 1.5 sacks. Jonique Andrews (So., DL, Oakland, Calif./Criminal Justice), who has been battling back from a knee injury last year, had a big game with five tackles and one sack.

Minot State was led offensively by Jarvis Mustipher, who had 27 carries for 126 yards. Quarterback Zac Cunha was 13-of-31 for 128 yards with a touchdown. His favorite target for the day was Leon LaDeaux, who had six catches for 82 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, the Beavers were led by eight tackles from linebacker Chad Marshall. Minot State finished with five sacks on the day led by two from Matt Sumlin. Levi Freidt and Boston had the interceptions for the Beavers.

The first quarter was very uneventful for both teams as neither team would score until right at the end of the period when Gutierrez would connect on a 25-yard field goal attempt to put Minot State up 3-0 after a 55-yard drive.

After much the same in the second quarter as the defenses dominated, Minot State would be poised to go up 6-0 as Gutierrez came on for another field goal try, this time from 26, however Drew Selvestra (So., DL, Eagan, Minn./Criminal Justice) blocked the kick and Webster picked it up and used his speed to get to the end zone after the 85-yard return in a play that was very reminiscent of a blocked kick return in last year's U-Mary game where Webster returned an extra point block for a touchdown. Mike Maw's (Fr., K, White Bear Lake, Minn./Accounting) extra-point attempt would be block to give UMC a 6-3 advantage which would be the score at half.

The Golden Eagles had a great start to the second half as in their first possession in the half and on the first play of the half, Pascal would hit the edge on a rush to the right and would race to the pylon, scoring the touchdown to put UMC ahead 12-3 after another Maw miss on an extra point.

The Beavers woudl answer as they went 72 yards on 11 plays culminating in a 22-yard touchdown pass from Cunha to LaDeaux to make it UMC 12, Minot State 10.

The Golden Eagles would respond at the beginning of the fourth quarter as Marcus Cheatham (Jr., WR, Stockton, Calif./Sports and Rec Management) hauled in a five-yard touchdown pass from Larson to put UMC up 19-10.

The Beavers would take over from there as Gutierrez would cut the UMC advantage with a 27-yard field goal attempt to make it UMC 19, Minot State 13.

The Golden Eagles look to have things wrapped up though late in the fourth quarter as they had the ball on the Minot State 45 with a third-and-short but chose to pass it after rushing it Pascal the previous two plays. However, Larson's pass proved errant and Boston would capitalize on the mistake as he returned it 59 yards for the go-ahead score which would ultimately give Minot State the win.

UMC was looking to reach three or more wins for the first time since the 2001 season but will have to wait until next week as they head to face a ranked for in the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs Sat., Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. in Duluth, Minn.
