Kenneth Walker, Michael's younger brother, led the Huskies on the ground with eight carries for 58 yards and a touchdown while Michael Walker had 10 carries for 54 yards and four touchdowns. Damon Treat led St. Cloud State in receiving with four catches for 87 yards.
Eric Poggenburg led the St. Cloud State defense with eight tackles while
Paul Webster (Sr., DB, Opa-Locka, Fla./Criminal Justice) led the Golden Eagles with 10 tackles while
Tevin Kellum (Sr., DB, Detroit, Mich./Criminal Justice) had nine tackles.
St. Cloud State put up 231 yards of offense in the first half and capitalized on a couple of Golden Eagle miscues in the punt game to get out to a 28-0 advantage at the half over Minnesota Crookston. Michael Walker had three touchdown rushes for the Huskies in the half. Quarterback Klaphake led the St. Cloud State offense going 13-of-17 for 108 yards and a touchdown. His top target in the passing game was Eli Shoemaker, who had three catches for 28 yards.
The Golden Eagles were limited to 40 yards of offense in the first half. Tommy Smith (So., RB, Naranja, Fla./Marketing) led the way with nine carries for 30 yards. Freshman quarterback Larson was 6-of-17 for 24 yards and an interception in the first half.
The UMC defense came up big early in the first half as they forced a three-and-out on the first drive. On St. Cloud State's second drive, the Huskies were able to drive the ball down to within the Golden Eagle red zone led by a pair of 11-yard passes from Klaphake to Taylor Berger. However UMC would make a big stand as
Freedom McCullough (Sr., DB, Los Angeles, Calif./Sports and Rec Management) came up with a big pass break-up in the end zone forcing a 26-yard field goal from Eric Mielke, which was missed.
The Huskies would start out with outstanding field position the next drive as a bad snap from
Jordan Manahan (Jr., LS, Shuniah, Ontario/Communications) forced
Tyler Hansen (Jr., DB/P, Morris, Minn./Natural Resources) to try to make something out of nothing as he was tackled at his own 15, handing the ball over to St. Cloud State. The Huskies would use the short field, capitalizing with a three-yard touchdown run from Walker.
The Huskies would add to their advantage early in the second quarter going 62 yards on eight plays, culminating on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Klaphake to Renard Robinson.
The Golden Eagle offense would try to get things going on the next drive as they converted a big third down as Larson hit Pascal on the sideline and Pascal got past the down marker for a nine-yard gain. A slippery run by Smith, as he looked to be down in the backfield, moved the ball four yards to the UMC 49, but the Golden Eagles would be stopped there and would be forced to punt. A snap over Hansen's head by Manahan would again give St. Cloud State prime field position at the Golden Eagle 26.
Back-up quarterback Jameson Parsons would come in to lead the Huskies on the drive and would use three rushes for 18 yards to guide the Huskies into the red zone where Walker would go in on a two-yard dive.
St. Cloud State would end the first half with one more score as Walker went in for his third touchdown of the half with a five-yard rush to pay dirt.
The Huskies would open up the second half poised for more points as Treat ran all over the place looking for an opening on a return and was tackled by his own player at his own 34. On the next play, Klaphake would hit Treat for 36 yards to move the ball to the UMC 30. The Huskies would extend their lead to 34-0 after a 13-yard pass from Klaphake to Corey Henne and a missed Eric Mielke extra point.
The Golden Eagles got the ball at the 16 after the stop and would move it to near midfield after a 21-yard pass from Larson to
Jacob Pinder (Jr., TE, Orlando, Fla./Management), however UMC wouldn't move it further as Hansen would be forced to punt. Another bobbled snap in the rainy conditions forced Hansen to rush it, gaining one yard and giving the Huskies the ball at the UMC 48.
The Huskies would be stopped twice in the third quarter but would score early in the fourth quarter after a pair of big plays. Back-up quarterback Parsons would hit Dan Brown for 40 yards. Brown was stripped of the ball by Webster but Brown recovered the ball. Parsons would then come up with another big pass, hitting Treat despite Webster batting the ball away, Treat would come away with the highlight reel catch at the UMC 10. After a holding, the ball would move back to the UMC 14, but Michael Walker's younger brother Kenneth Walker would go in from 14 yards out for the score to make it SCSU 41, UMC 0.
The Golden Eagles would finally get a big play as Pascal would go 75 yards to pay dirt to put UMC on the board. A bobbled snap by the holder would prevent UMC from getting the point after making it Huskies 41, Golden Eagles 6.
St. Cloud State would extend their advantage to 48-6 after Michael Walker's fourth rushing touchdown of the day, this time from 27 yards out. Between Michael and Kenneth Walker, the brothers had five rushing touchdowns.
The Huskies would put a stamp on their win as Poggenburg ran back a 70-yard interception return off a
Nathan Cole (Fr., QB, Aliso Viejo, Calif./Management) pass to give St. Cloud State the 55-6 advantage.
The Golden Eagles will return home Oct. 19 to face Minnesota State University Moorhead at 1 p.m. in the "Red River Valley Showdown Sponsored by State Farm Insurance".
