The two teams traded baskets early on in the first half but after Niang hit a three-pointer to knot the game at 14-14 with just under nine minutes remaining, Northern State went on a 7-0 run to get the lead out to 21-14 with all the points being scored by Emge. The Golden Eagles were able to cut into the deficit beginning with a Sparkman put-back with just under three minutes to make it 21-16. However, Tetzlaff hit one-of-two free throws to get it back out to a six-point Northern State advantage (22-16). Harrell got a basket for the Golden Eagles to cut it to a four-point deficit (22-18) but a quick response from the Wolves' Geoff Firmin made it (24-18). UMC again, used a quick response with a jumper from Tomas Parker (So., F/C, Pequot Lakes, Minn.) to cut it back to four points (24-20) but Northern State's Pryor would hit a basket to again get the lead back out to six points (26-20). That would be the score going into the break.

The Wolves built on their early dominance and would get up by as many as 22 points (55-33) following an Emge three at the seven minute mark. The Golden Eagles would cut into the lead beginning with a Lubke three and followed by a basket from Krdzalic  to cut it to 17 (55-38) but they wouldn't be able to get closer as Northern State would take the victory over the Golden Eagles.
