Box Score CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota, Crookston men's basketball team was unable to find a rhythm Friday night as they fell 66-41 at the hands of Wayne State College (Neb.). The Golden Eagles remain winless in conference play as they drop to 3-9 (0-8 NSIC). Wayne State improves to 9-5 (3-5 NSIC) with Friday's victory.
The Golden Eagles had a decent night from the field shooting connecting on 15-of-34 for 44.1 percent. In addition, they were 9-of-11 for 81.8 percent from the charity stripe. However defensive woes would cripple UMC as Wayne State finished the night shooting 19-of-35 from the field for 54.3 percent and 57.9 percent from beyond the arc for 57.9 percent. The Wildcats also had a lot of attempts from the line as they connected on 17-of-26 for 65.4 percent.
UMC was led on the night by eight points from senior forward
Abdou Niang (Dakar, Senegal) while
Ashton Harrell (Jr., G, Houston, Texas) chipped in seven points and
James Sparkman (R-Jr., F, Ypsilanti, Mich.) and
Justin Rake (Sr., G, Petal, Miss.) each added six points on the night. The Golden Eagles were led on the boards by five rebounds from Niang but were ultimately out-rebounded by the Wildcats by a tally of 21 to 20. The Golden Eagles were also hampered by turnovers on the night with 21 overall.
Wayne State was paced by 18 points from Ryan Rolfzen off the bench. Rolfzen helped ignite a Wayne State attack that drained 11 treys. Rolfzen was 5-of-9 from beyond the arc on the night. Derrell Williams added 10 points on the night while Ty Bauschek chipped in nine points on three treys. The Wildcats were led on the boards on the night by six rebounds from guard Amry Shelby.
The Golden Eagles went into the half down by only 12 points (32-21) but would be out-scored 34-21 in the second half. UMC struggled to find the basket enough times as they continue to look for ways to get points on the board after only scoring 41 points in Friday's game.
UMC was without normal starter
Broderick Schmidt (Sr., F, Marion, S.D.). Schmidt missed the game as he continues to struggle with knee issues. He is scheduled to go to the doctor next week to figure out more about his knee troubles.
Golden Eagle starting football quarterback A.J. Barge (R-Fr., G, Carrollton, Ga.) made his men's basketball debut Friday night as he scored four points in five minutes off the bench. Barge just joined the team at the semester. He suited up last weekend but did not appear in either of the two games.
