Augustana Uses Offensive Barrage to Take Down UMC 61-0

Box Score SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of Minnesota, Crookston football team fell 61-0 at the hands of Augustana College Saturday afternoon at Kirkeby-Over Stadium in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Vikings racked up 530 yards of offense to UMC's 146 total yards of offense. UMC falls to 0-3 on the season while Augustana improves to 2-1 on the year. 
Richard Haley (Sr., RB, Detroit, Mich.) led the team with 70 yards on 16 carries. Haley has had a solid start to his second season in the Maroon and Gold as he has rushed 56 times for 331 yards through three games. Haley was a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division First Team selection last season. Freshman running back Wes Tucker (West St. Paul, Minn.) rushed for 40 yards on nine carries. A.J. Barge (So., QB, Carrollton, Ga.) was 4-of-13 for 39 yards and one interception while Derek Stewart II (Fr., QB, Carson, Calif.), who came on in relief of Barge was 4-of-17 for 32 yards passing and one interception. Keith McBride (Sr., RB, Lodi, Wis.) led the team in receiving with three catches for 29 yards.
 
Cecil Brown, Jr. (Sr., DB, Edison, Ga.) led the Golden Eagles in tackles for the third time this season with 14 while Tevin Kellum (Jr., DB, Detroit, Mich.) added eight. Freedom McCullough (Jr., DB, Valley Village, Calif.) had two interceptions while Rene Lawson Jr. (Fr., DL, Arlington, Texas) returned one fumble for 38 yards.
 
Augustana was led by 2011 NSIC South Division Second Team pick Josh Hanson, who was 13-of-20 for 195 yards and four touchdowns. Fellow 2011 NSIC South Division Second Team selection Dajon Newell had 122 yards on the ground on 14 carries with two touchdowns. Jason Greenway added 85 yards in the running game on six carries with one touchdown. Grant Gebhardt led the Vikings in receiving with four receptions for 60 yards.
 
Defensively, Augustana was paced by Austin Luecke with 11 tackles and an interception which he returned 42 yards for a touchdown. Thomas Vanasek also had an interception for the Golden Eagles and added eight tackles and two tackles for loss.
 
The Vikings started the game by putting up 21 points in the first quarter. Augustana opened their scoring barrage with a 25 yard touchdown pass from Hanson to Gebhardt. They added to their lead as Hanson found Matt Gerry for 33 yards and a touchdown with 8:11 in the first. The Vikings went ahead 21-0 as Newell ran nine yards to pay dirt with just over four minutes left in the quarter.
 
Augustana added to their lead with 20 more points in the second quarter to go into half time with a 41-0 lead. Newell found the end zone again with a one yard run for the Vikings to go ahead 28-0. Augustana went up 34-0 as Hanson found Jorgenson for 11 yards. The Vikings rounded out the first half with Luecke's 42 yard interception of a Barge pass which he returned to the end zone.
 
Augustana would add 20 more points in the second half. The Vikings went up 48-0 when Hanson connected on his fourth touchdown pass to Noah Huisman. Augustana rounded out their scoring as Tanner Foth had a 19 yard touchdown run and Jason Greenway rushed 60 yards to the end zone to cap a 61-0 victory.
 
The 61 points given up to Augustana was the most the Golden Eagles have given up to an opponent since allowing St. Cloud State University to score 66 Oct. 22, 2011.
 
The Golden Eagles will look to get back on a winning track as they take on Southwest Minnesota State Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. in the team's homecoming game. UMC will also continue to look to break a winless streak in the NSIC that dates back to Sept. 27, 2008 against Minnesota State University, Moorhead
