Turnovers Plague Golden Eagles in 38-14 Loss to 8th Ranked UMD

Box Score (Crookston, Minn.) – The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) took advantage of five University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) turnovers and overcame sloppy field conditions to defeat the Golden Eagles 38-14 in a Northern Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Football game today at Ed Widseth Field in Crookston, Minn.

The Bulldogs, ranked 8th in both the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and DIIfootball.com polls, were held scoreless until 2:40 left in the first quarter when quarterback Chase Vogler found Jeremy Reierson from six yards out. Andrew Brees's kick failed and UMD led 6-0. With 1:13 to go in the quarter, UMD's Gavin Grady recovered a Golden Eagle fumble in the end zone followed by an extra point from Brees to make the score 13-0 Bulldogs.

Vogler took matters into his own hands with 11:00 to go in the second quarter and rushed seven yards to pay-dirt. Brees scampered into the end zone on a two-point conversion to make the score 21-0 in favor of UMD. Vogler used his legs again with 41 seconds remaining galloping six yards followed by an extra point from Brees to make the score 28-0 in favor of the Bulldogs. UMD's Fossum Foncham forced a fumble out of Golden Eagle quarterback A.J.
Barge (6-3, 190, So, QB, Carrollton, Georgia) with 25 seconds left in the half. This allowed Brees to drill a 34 yard field goal as time expired and made the score 31-0 Bulldogs going into halftime.

The second half saw Vogler use his running skills again as he plunged in from the one-yard line with 9:32 left in the third quarter. Brees put his extra point through the uprights to make the score 38-0 in favor of UMD. UMC got on the board in exciting fashion off the ensuing kickoff when Talo Pascal (5-9, 175, Fr, RB, Arlington, Texas) returned the ball 88 yards for a Golden Eagle touchdown. Stephen Henderson's (6-6, 240, Sr, TE/K, Chatsworth, Cal.) extra point made the score 38-7.

The Golden Eagles scored again with 3:41 remaining in the game when Marcus Cheatham (5-11, 185, Jr, WR, Stockton, Calif.) took a pass from Barge and outraced the UMD defense 66 yards to the end zone. Henderson's extra point made the final score 38-14.

Jeron Johnson led UMD and all rushers with 95 yards on 11 carries. Austin Sikorski added 72 yards on 11 carries. Vogler rushed 10 times for 39 yards and three touchdowns. Zach Zweifel led the Bulldog receiving corps with three receptions for 42 yards. Joe Reichert added two receptions for 41 yards. Defensively, Colby Ring led UMD with six tackles (three solo/three unassisted). Blake Rogers added four tackles (one solo/three assisted) and an interception return of 62 yards.

Barge led UMC's rushing attack on the sloppy surface with 40 yards on nine carries. The UMC defense was stout all-day when put into precarious situations. The story for Golden Eagle defense continues to be Cecil Brown (5-10, 205, Sr, DB, Edison, Georgia) who recorded ten tackles (seven solo/three assisted) and moved into first place for career  solo tackles at UMC with 153. Brown broke Justin Reed's career record of 152 which he set in 2005. Andrew Hall (6-1, 260, Jr, LB, Detroit, Mich.) also added ten tackles (five solo/five assisted).

UMD improves to 8-1 overall and 8-1 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles fall to 1-8 overall and 1-8 in the NSIC.

UMC closes out the road portion of their schedule on Saturday, November 3 when they travel to Aberdeen, S.D. to face Northern State University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
