Golden Eagle Football Hosts Wayne State in NSIC Opener for Both Teams

(Crookston, Minn.)-  The University of Minnesota, Crookston opened the 2011 season with a 31-29 non-conference victory over Mayville State University. On Saturday, September 10, the Golden Eagles will open the NSIC season as UMC hosts the Wildcats of Wayne State College. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Ed Widseth Field on the University of Minnesota, Crookston campus.
 
Minnesota, Crookston (1-0, 0-0 NSIC)- Leading the way for the Golden Eagle offense against Mayville State was Richard Haley (RB, 6-0, 205, Jr., Detroit, Mich.) who rushed the ball 30 times for an impressive 225 yards. He had a long of 54-yards and average 7.5 yards/rush in the game. A.J. Barge (QB, 6-3, 190, Fr., Carrollton, Ga.) was 11-16 for 183-yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for 66-yards and added two more touchdowns on the ground. UMC's offense rushed for 303-yards, passed for 183-yards and finished with game with 71 plays for 486 total yards. Kicker Chris Secrest (K, 5-11, 170, Jr., Hollywood, Fla.) nailed a 38-yarder to seal the 31-29 victory for the Golden Eagles with two seconds remaining in the game. Secrest was also 4-4 on PAT attempts in the game.
 
Wayne State College (0-1, 0-0 NSIC)- Junior wide receiver Kevin Paulsen scored Wayne State's lone offensive touchdown vs. #16 Nebraska-Kearney, hauling in a 10 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Evan Johnson. Paulsen, a 5-9 170 pounder from Pierce, Nebraska, finished the game with a team-high five receptions for 46 yards and also added three kickoff returns for 63 yards for the Wildcats. Redshirt freshman linebacker Nick Monzu, playing his first-ever collegiate game, recorded 10 tackles with one interception returned for 23 yards to go with a forced fumble in last Thursday's game vs. Nebraska-Kearney. Monzu, a 6-0 195 pounder from Missouri Valley, Iowa, had four solo stops and six assists to match Richard Daniel for the team lead in tackles against the Lopers. Senior Tommy Warren, a 5-11 180 pound senior from Omaha, Nebraska (North HS), had an 82 yard kickoff return against #16 Nebraska-Kearney in last Thurs­day's 41-20 setback to the Lopers. Warren finished the game with three kickoff returns for 102 yards for the Wildcats.
