Box Score (Crookston, Minn.)- Northern Michigan University (NMU) scored one goal in the first half and added two more in the second to defeat the University of Minnesota, Crookston 3-1 in non-conference women's soccer action today in Marquette, Mich. The game was the regular season opener for the Golden Eagles.
The Wildcats got on the board at 27:26 of the game when Chelsea Lyons scored off an assist from Jessica Lussardi. Lyons scored again at 46:02 off an assist from Brekelle Sellers. U of M, Crookston's Nikki Hammond (So, F, Nelson, Minn.) cut the score to 2-1 when she scored off an assist from Jessica Ramirez (Fr, F, Millbrae, Cal.) at 56:27. NMU put the game away at 58:02 when Lyons capped an outstanding day with her third goal of the day off another assist from Sellers.
Jessica Baker had one save for the Wildcats. Amanda Stapleton (Jr, G, Jonesboro, Ark.) had five saves for the Golden Eagles.
NMU improves to 1-0-1 on the season. U of M, Crookston starts the year at 0-1-0.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday, September 4 when they travel to Michigan Tech University. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. (E.S.T.).
