Box Score (St. Paul, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Football team traveled to Concordia- St. Paul today to take on the Golden Bears in an NSIC contest. Both teams are looking to rebound following tough losses the previous week. Minnesota, Crookston fell to #14 St. Cloud State 66-13, while Concordia- St. Paul lost to Winona State 58-24. Today, the Golden Bears jumped out to a 24-0 lead before taking the 38-20 victory. In the contest, the Golden Eagle defense grabbed three interceptions but the momentum was slowed by five fumbles with three being lost to CSP by the UMC offense.
Concordia- St. Paul opened the scoring at the 7:44 mark of the first quarter with a 41 yard field goal by Tom Obarski. The Golden Bears then added three passing touchdowns with two going to Nate Thienes and one going to Tre Mason all from quarterback Spencer Ohm to put CSP up 24-0 with 9:31 left in the first half. Minnesota, Crookston found the end zone after an 11 play, 68 yard drive that was capped off by a 16 yard run by quarterback A.J. Barge (QB, 6-3, 190, Fr., Carrollton, Ga.). The Golden Bears added another score with 55 seconds to go in the half on a Ohm pass to Jermaine Clemon to put Concordia- St. Paul up 31-7 going into the break. Minnesota, Crookston was the only team to find the end zone in the third quarter when running back
Richard Haley (RB, 6-0, 205, Jr., Detroit, Mich.) scored on a two yard rush to get UMC within 31-13. The Golden Eagles opened up the scoring again in the fourth quarter when Barge hit tight end
Matt Borowicz (TE, 6-8, 250, Fr., Stephen, Minn.) on a 13 yard touchdown reception to get the Golden Eagles within 11 points at 31-20. At the 11:40 mark of the fourth quarter, Concordia-St. Paul sealed the victory with Thienes third touchdown reception of the game from Ohm to give CSP the 38-20 NSIC victory.
Barge led the Golden Eagle offense with 113 rushing yards on 21 carries. He completed 11 passes for 92 yards and rushed for a touchdown and threw for a touchdown. Haley rushed a game-high 27 times for 96 yards and one touchdown.
Eric Fiege (WR, 5-9, 175, Jr., San Diego, Calif.) caught three passes for 31 yards. Defensively, the Golden Eagles held the Golden Bears to 4 of 11 in third down conversions.
Cecil Brown (LB, 5-10, 205, Jr., Edison, Ga.) led the defense with 10 (4 solo, 6 assisted) total tackles. He tallied 1.5 tackles for a loss of three yards and recovered one fumble. The trio of
Cody Hendrickson (DB, 5-10, 185, Sr., Wright, Minn.),
Justin Overby (LB, 6-3, 240, Sr., Langdon, N.D.) and Chris DeVaughn (DB, 6-1, 170, So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) each had an interception on the day. The UMC defense also earned five tackles for a loss of 13 yards.
Concordia- St. Paul was led by Ohm who completed 14 passes for 247 yards and five touchdowns. Running back Sam Campbell rushed 15 times for 139 yards with a long of 42 yards and a 9.3 yards/rush average. Campbell also caught five passes for 71 yards. Thienes caught four passes for three touchdowns and 39 yards. Taylor Selby led all defensive players with 14 total tackles, two sacks and six tackles for a loss of 25 yards.
Minnesota, Crookston is now 1-8 on the season and 0-8 in the NSIC. Concordia- St. Paul advances to 4-5 overall and 3-5 in conference play. The Golden Eagles go on the road next Saturday, November 5 when the team travels to #7 University of Minnesota Duluth. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
