Lloyd Mayes came to the University of Minnesota, Crookston in 1968 and led the school to two consecutive conference titles. Mayes was recruited from Washington, DC, by head men's basketball coach, Marv Bachmeier and he immediately made an impact on the basketball program. His 1968-69 season is recognized as one of most outstanding performances ever given at the University of Minnesota, Crookston.
The 1969-70 basketball squad was led to its second title again by Lloyd Mayes.
In addition to being UMC's most valuable basketball player for two years, Mayes led a very successful track and field team to several first place finishes in numerous meets. Mayes was named UMC's most valuable trackman and was the leading point getter for two seasons of participation. He set a conference record in the triple jump of 42' 10" during the 1970 conference tournament.
