Jim Clauson played hockey at UMC in 1973 and 1974. In 1973, Jim played an instrumental role in leading UMC to First Place in the State Junior Collegiate Hockey League. The team went on to Lake Placid, New York and finished second in the National Junior College Hockey Tournament.

Clauson's skill as a puck handler and skater was well recognized by his teammates and opponents. He became one of the best hockey players to have played at UMC. His quickness, speed and skillful play made him one of the more admired and respected players on the ice. During his first year with the UMC hockey team he scored an impressive 80 points and even though he was injured in his sophomore season, he still managed to score 40 points.

In 1974, Clauson received the Mike Davis Memorial Award and was also selected as the team's most valuable player.

Following his playing days, Clauson went on to become a very successful hockey coach at his alma mater. His teams won several state championships and advanced to the national playoff tournaments.
