Dana was born to Dana and Grace Powers in Breckenridge, Minnesota. Dana's father will be remembered as a long time athletic official in the area. Powers graduated from Moorhead High School and was a three sport letterman there. He still holds the pole vault record of 14' 7" at Moorhead High.
Powers attended the University of Minnesota, Crookston in 1976 and 1977. During that time he participated in football and track, earning All American Honors as a defensive back and Honorable Mention as a running back. Powers, a team captain, was instrumental in two very successful football seasons.
Following his stay at UMC, Powers transferred to the University of Nebraska and played free safety.
Later, he transferred to the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus and concentrated in the field of education and coaching. He was an assistant football and track coach at Cooper High School.
In 1981, Powers moved to Maui, Hawaii and has been in the property management business for the past 18 years.
