Gary Wagner was an integral part of the 1973 undefeated UMC football team. The team ended the season first in the conference, first in the state, and fourth in the nation. Wagner was selected to the Little All American National Football Team. His skill was highly recognized as well as his leadership in producing one of UMC's finest teams in the history of the college.

Deryl Ramey, former UMC football coach said, "Gary was one of the best all-around football players to ever play at UMC. His speed, size, and strength made him one of the most feared running backs to play at UMC."
